Plunging into the seven stories in Hale's (The Evolution of Bruno Littlemore) first collection is like putting a finger into somebody else's navel: something rank and organic and awfully familiar is there. Hale's well-hewn, often violent tales are saturated with sadness and full of strange, marginal folk, but the thoughts, desires, and failures of these oddball characters are acutely recognizable. In "Don't Worry Baby," washed-up radicals troll the world, still tripping even with a baby in tow. In "If I Had Possession Over Judgment Day," several sweet losersâyoung, middle-aged, and old alikeâattempt murder and flee the scene, one naked and painted silver. There are stories featuring drag queens, a dominatrix, a father who cracks the skull of his drugged-out kid with a rolling pin, a man who drives a truck full of eels into a cow, and the obese performance artist of the book's title, who eats himself to death. Hale's hapless souls are pretty much all pathetic, but the reader comes away grateful for the sincerity of their melancholy quests to find meaning, love, and the purposes of their ill-fated lives. They mostly fail, some tragically, but not before leaving behind tidbits of wisdom about what it means to be human. This book is at once absurd, morbid, melancholy, ridiculous, and disturbing. It is also erudite and very nearly pretentious, all of which, for like-minded skeptics, pretty much sums up American life around the turn of the 21st century. Hale received the Bard Fiction Prize and a Michener-Copernicus Award for his debut novel, The Evolution of Bruno Littlemore, with a nomination for the New York Public Library's Young Lions Fiction Award to boot. This collection is just as edgy: a man's illicit tryst is interrupted by his estranged son's arrival, for instance, and a performance artist who piles on the pounds becomes an art world sensation.

A well-written and jarring collection of stories depicts people out on the edge, such as artists, recovering addicts, prostitutes, or others whose surroundings or circumstances have led them to an extreme place. The title story features an artist who commits to eating nonstop as a public performance piece. In another, a cross-dresser and punk performance artist becomes involved with a photographer, who invites him to a party with some of her upper-class friends in New York City, where wealthy guests cross-dress as a kind of hobby. In "The Minus World," a pathetic yet likable young man comes out of rehab, moves in with his brother and his wife, makes a brief tragic-comic attempt to begin again clean, and rapidly starts another descent to the bottom. In "Don't Worry Baby," radical Sixties revolutionaries on the run take a hallucinogenic on a long plane flight, provoking an abrupt change of lifestyle and outlook for one of them. VERDICT Readers will be rapidly drawn into the quick-paced stories of lives gone astray.
