"LaVoy is a well-accomplished audio narrator across multiple genres, and most audiobook lovers will immediately recognize her virtuosic voice with its incisive tones. Here, for the large cast, she gives exceptional and distinct narration to each of the parents, teachers, cops, and children (even creating youthful and fang-induced lisps for some of the children). This narration is an immersive experience and the audio version is highly recommended."- Booklist (Starred Review)
"January LaVoy narrates, bringing the personalities of each mother alive for listeners. LaVoy also provides a variety of startlingly realistic children's voices, which range from sweet and innocent to whining and ill-tempered."- Library Journal
This audiobook is read by January LaVoy, Publishers Weekly Audiobook Narrator of the Year in 2013. She has also been nominated for 18 Audie Awards, receiving seven, and has garnered over three dozen AudioFile Earphones Awards.
At the Little Academy, mothers fret over their preschoolers, who have developed an unsettling medical syndrome. The children's odd craving for blood is considered relatively benign (to everyone except their beleaguered moms) until a young teacher is found dead and the only potential witnesses are ten adorable 4-year-olds. Then it becomes clear that the police are looking at the children as not just witnesses, but also suspects...and they're watching their mothers as well.
Darby, Mary Beth, and Freddie have very different parenting styles, though they're united in their love for their children. They're not thrilled about the biting episodes sweeping through the class, of course, and they're coping to various degrees with the pressures of being a good mom, which suddenly seems to include, in addition to everything else, offering themselves up as sustenance.
Each of them was there at Little Academy the day of the murder, and as the police begin to look at them more closely, their children's ability to bleed them dry is becoming not merely metaphorical. Exploring the standards society holds mothers to—along with the ones to which we hold ourselves—and the things no one ever tells you about becoming a parent, Cutting Teeth is a witty, original story of parental love that asks if there is anything a mother is not asked to sacrifice for their children.

Bestseller Baker (The Husbands) takes readers on a stomach-dropping emotional roller coaster in this suspenseful and darkly comic tale of motherhood and murder. At first, the parents of RiverRock Church’s private preschool students are overjoyed when young Miss Erin Ollie, with her perpetual smile and PhD in child development, joins the faculty. However, their initial enthusiasm wanes as some of the four-year-olds in her class begin exhibiting a morbid fascination with biting and consuming blood. Before long, Miss Ollie is found dead in the school’s supply room with a pair of scissors protruding from her neck, and police zero in on her students and their protective mothers as the primary suspects. Three of those mothers narrate: there’s Rhea, who sells homeopathic remedies online; Darcy, once a high-powered executive, now an overqualified crisis manager for the county; and Mary Beth, who has dedicated her entire life to parenting her two daughters. Baker’s descriptions of the joys and trials of raising children bolster the mystery at the book’s core. With winning cynicism, she delivers a wicked thriller that doubles as a glimpse at motherhood’s dark underbelly.

Baker (The Husbands) tells a cynical, offbeat tale, revealing the underbelly of suburban motherhood and parental love. The parents of Little Academy are thrilled when young Miss Erin Ollie joins the faculty to teach their preschoolers. However, the school year quickly sours when the children begin to bite and develop an unusual craving--human blood. Soon after this development, Miss Ollie is found dead, and the preschoolers are the only witnesses. The story is told from the perspectives of three mothers--Darby, Mary Beth, and Rhea--as they navigate motherhood under increasingly odd circumstances, attempt to maintain outward appearances, and uncover what happened to poor Miss Ollie. January LaVoy narrates, bringing the personalities of each mother alive for listeners. LaVoy also provides a variety of startlingly realistic children's voices, which range from sweet and innocent to whining and ill-tempered. VERDICT A story of psychological suspense that explores the unspoken aspects of motherhood and the lengths to which parents will go to protect their children. Fans of Zoje Stage's Baby Teeth and Grady Hendrix's The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires will enjoy this.--Meghan Bouffard
