In Rayner's third Brighton-based novel, readers meet three very different characters struggling with mental-health issues. Karen is mourning the death of her husband, caring for her mother, and raising two children alone. Abby is going through a difficult separation and raising an autistic son. And Michael is trying to support his family as his business heads toward bankruptcy. When these difficult situations reach crisis points, all three find themselves at the Morland Clinic, a psychiatric treatment center where they meet and begin their journeys toward diagnosis and, finally, recovery. Rayner has turned a challenging subject into a deeply absorbing read. She skillfully and successfully illustrates the impact of mental health care on patients, families, friends, and the community and addresses the often perilous divide between public and private care. Her strong, sympathetic characters feel drawn from life, and their real-world feelings and experiences get passed on to the reader. Another Day, Another Night is a powerful novel, a satisfying examination of mental health care and its impact on the world around us.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2014, American Library Association.)
