The whole staff (and most of an extended Italian American family) are at the ready when the matriarch of their restaurant is arrested for slaying her boyfriend with a mortar in the kitchen. "Must find Nonna innocent" is their mantra, under the lead of chef and favored granddaughter Eve Angelotta. Eve has trouble piecing together why someone wanted the septuagenarian boyfriend dead, why he was apparently stealing Eve's beloved Enrico Caruso recording, and why her grandmother keeps changing her story. When Eve realizes how deceitful the victim was, she worries that others around her haven't been forthright either. Luckily, lawyer Joe Beck is there to help. VERDICT The Philadelphia region gets its moment in the sun with this laugh-filled cozy debut. Yes, you'll figure out the motive before Eve does, but that's OK--she catches up pretty quickly. This would appeal to Kate Collins ("Flower Shop" mysteries) and Avery Aames ("Cheese Shop") fans.
