The Witness at the Wedding
(OverDrive MP3 Audiobook, OverDrive Listen)
The seaside town of Fethering, home to Carole Seddon and her friend Jude, is a place rife with foul play, as evidenced in this sixth mystery in the series.
Carole is thrilled with the coming wedding of her once-estranged son, Stephen. She finds it odd, though, that the parents of the bride have no interest in arranging the wedding and seem terrified at the prospect of publicizing it. Things turn deadly intriguing when the father of the bride disappears at the engagement party, only to be found brutally murdered the following morn. Now, Carole elicits Jude’s help in sifting through the guest list, including Gaby’s nefarious brother and her uncle, a justice of the peace, before the festivities become completely funereal.

- content: I didn't tell you there's a history of murder in my fiancée's family. An offhand remark from Carole Seddon's son before his wedding provides the perfect opening to this British mystery. Simon Brett reads that line, and many others, with a droll humor that emphasizes the comic observations in his writing. The murders are seen from the perspective of Carole Seddon, a slightly snobbish Home Office retiree who is fascinated by crime. Brett's voices reveal the edges of his characters, as Carole sourly recalls her failed marriage or an ex-con twists under questioning by Carole and her friend Jude. His voices are especially effective considering that most of his main characters are female. J.A.S. (c) AudioFile 2006, Portland, Maine

- content: In this sixth in the Fethering series, Carole Seddon and her sidekick, neighbor Jude, investigate a thirty-year-old murder that is tied to her son's upcoming marriage to Gaby Martin. Author and narrator Simon Brett has a knack for bringing out his characters, including their flaws. In Brett's narration Carole comes through as inquisitive as she is critical. Brett also captures the soft-spoken bumbling of Carole's ex-husband, the bubbly chatter of Gaby, and the deep, raspy tones of Gaby's elderly French grand-mre. When Gaby and Jude visit Gaby's grandmother in France, Brett does justice to the French dialogue. Brett's mystery will draw listeners in, and his engaging narration will keep them listening. E.N.
