Of Mess and Moxie: Wrangling Delight Out of This Wild and Glorious Life
(OverDrive MP3 Audiobook, OverDrive Listen)
Life is messy for each of us. But Jen Hatmaker reminds us that it's okay to admit that we're all in the same boat. Join New York Times bestselling author and honorary big sister Jen as she shares hilarious tales, shameless honesty, and unconditional hope for the woman who's forgotten her moxie.
We will endure discouragement, heartbreak, failure, and suffering. All of us. And more than once. But we are the very same folks who can experience triumph, perseverance, joy, and rebirth. More than once. And in more than one category. And in more than one season. And that? That's moxie.
Moxie reaches for laughter, for courage, for the deep and important truth that women are capable of weathering the storm. We are not victims, we are not weak, we are not a sad, defeated group of sob sisters. Yes, life is hard, but we are incredibly resilient.
Of Mess and Moxie shines a light on Jen's own triumphs and tragedies into a sigh of relief for all normal, fierce women everywhere. Whether it's the time she drove to the wrong city for a fourth-grade field trip or the way she learned to truly forgive, she offers a reminder to those of us who sometimes hide in the car eating crackers that we do actually have the moxie to get back up and face our messes head-on. After all, this race is not a contest—there's enough abundance to go around.
This book will give you the encouragement you need to remember that:
Come alongside Jen as she teaches us that we can all choose to live undaunted and in the moment, no matter what the moments hold, and we really can lead vibrant, courageous, grace-filled lives.

Bestselling humorist Hatmaker (For the Love), a blogger, pastor, HGTV star, and mother of five, will be familiar to any evangelical Christian reader. She’s like a friend whose laugh that most of the time is fun to listen to but sometimes it’s too much. Here, Hatmaker piles on stories about bingeing on food (or wine or Netflix) alongside a bevy of kid poop jokes and kids-learn-human-anatomy jokes. Tucked in between are conversational reflections designed to offer pastoral advice and empathy when things go wrong. Those who don’t spend time in the evangelical subculture may miss some of the references (singer Sandi Patty, Baptist youth groups) and find that the humor relies on too many stereotypes of women, Erma Bombeck style. But those who find religious people humorless should certainly read this book. Hatmaker has humor in spades, which will please those looking for laughs, but her work will disappoint readers wishing for something with more depth. Agent: Curtis Yates, Yates & Yates.

- content: Jen Hatmaker's twelfth book is an unreservedly honest and heartfelt guide to how women can approach their messy lives with moxie. The self-described low-grade Christian author narrates her own story. She provides anecdotes not included in the written text, which add more fun to the listening experience. The chapters start with interesting quotes delivered in her upbeat Southern twang. They smooth the way into her reflections as a Christian woman who appreciates God's gifts. Hatmaker's use of sarcasm and self-deprecation is disarming as she tackles varied topics, making this book sound like a conversation with a trusted friend. Listeners should have a pen and paper ready to take down her recipes and helpful tips. S.H. Winner of AudioFile Earphones Award © AudioFile 2017, Portland, Maine
