Description
An ambitious career woman signs up for a co-parenting website only to find a match she never expected, in this unflinchingly funny and honest novel from the author of Last Tang Standing.
Management consultant Lucie Yi is done waiting for Mr. Right. After a harrowing breakup foiled her plans for children—and drove her to a meltdown in a Tribeca baby store—she’s ready to take matters into her own hands. She signs up for an elective co-parenting website to find a suitable partner with whom to procreate—as platonic as family planning can be.

Collin Read checks all of Lucie’s boxes; he shares a similar cultural background, he’s honest, and most important, he’s ready to become a father. When they match, it doesn’t take long for Lucie to take a leap of faith for her future. So what if her conservative family might not approve? When Lucie becomes pregnant, the pair return to Singapore and, sure enough, her parents refuse to look on the bright side. Even more complicated, Lucie’s ex-fiancé reappears, sparking unresolved feelings and compounding work pressures and the baffling ways her body is changing. Suddenly her straightforward arrangement is falling apart before her very eyes, and Lucie will have to decide how to juggle the demands of the people she loves while pursuing the life she really wants.

In Honey and Spice, following Babalola's buzzy debut story collection, Love in Color, young Black British woman Kiki Banjo--host of a popular student radio show and known for preaching bad-relationship avoidance--gets tangled in a fake liaison with the very guy she's been citing as big trouble. From Bays, co-creator of the Emmy Award-winning series How I Met Your Mother, 2015 New York-set The Mutual Friend features Alice Quick, mourning her mother, barely managing as a nanny, and trying to make herself sign up for the MCATs even as her tech millionaire brother experiences a religious awakening. In Blush author Brenner's latest, three sisters from a Gilt-edged family in the jewelry business are torn apart following a publicity stunt gone wrong, with one sister dying in a subsequent accident and her daughter struggling to regain traction within the family. In Coleman's Good Morning, Love, aspiring songwriter/musician Carlisa "Carli" Henton's efforts to keep her business and personal lives separate crumble when she meets rising hip-hop star Tau Anderson (50,000-copy first printing). From Egyptian-Irish BBC broadcaster El-Wardany, These Impossible Things features friends Malak, Kees, and Jenna, on the verge of adulthood as they struggle to be good Muslim women yet wanting to follow their dreams (50,000-copy first printing). In Fowler's It All Comes Down To This, three sisters--freelance journalist Beck, struggling with her marriage and a desire to write fiction; Claire, an accomplished pediatric cardiologist, recently divorced; and Sophie, leading a glamorous life she can't afford--face their mother's impending death and the fate of their beloved summer cottage on Mount Desert Island, ME. In Ho's Lucie Yi Is Not a Romantic, a follow-up to the LJ-starred Last Tang Standing, a hardworking career woman gives up on finding the right guy after her fianc calls off their marriage and signs up for an elective co-parenting website so that she can have a baby--with unexpected consequences. In USA Today best-selling Moore's latest, Maine is not exactly Vacationland for Louisa when she visits her parents one summer with her three children, as she's dealing with an unfinished book, an absentee husband, and a father suffering from Alzheimer's, plus a young stranger in town trying to get her own life in order (100,000-copy first printing). In popular Patrick's The Messy Life of Book People, Liv Green forms a tentative friendship with the mega-best-selling author for whom she works as a housecleaner but is surprised when the author dies suddenly and in her will asks that Liv complete her final book (75,000 paperback and 10,000-copy paperback first printing). In Saint X author Schaitkin's Elsewhere, an interesting departure, Vera grows up in a small town where for generations women keep vanishing mysteriously (200,000-copy first printing). Vercher follows the Edgar-nominated, best-booked Three-Fifths with After the Lights Go Out, about a biracial MMA fighter aging out of his career and facing his father's end-stage Alzheimer's when he scores a last-minute comeback fight. Already a multi-award winner, Wolfe debuts with Last Summer on State Street, about Felicia "Fe Fe" Stevens and two close-as-hugging friends--a happy threesome that expands to an uneasy foursome even as the Chicago Housing Authority prepares to tear down the high-rise in the projects where Fe Fe's family lives (50,000-copy first printing).

        February 28, 2022
A pragmatic woman takes a shortcut to motherhood in this lopsided romance from Ho (Last Tang Standing). Career-driven New Yorker Lucie Yi has given up on love, but a breakdown in a children’s boutique has her realizing she still longs to be a mother. She signs up for a website that connects individuals interested in platonic co-parenting arrangements and hits it off with charming software engineer Collin Read. After “parent-dating,” they agree to try for a kid. Though Lucie is determined to keep things platonic, deeming Collin “Mr. Right Enough,” she can’t deny the spark between them, especially after their passionate attempt at conceiving is successful. The introduction and execution of this premise feel rushed and thrown together, but things take a turn for the better when Collin moves with Lucie back to Singapore, where Lucie is reunited with her old flame, Mark Thum. Torn between the man from her past and the man who could be her future, Lucie must decide what she’s willing to risk for the life she wants. Ho hits her stride in this second act, introducing a larger cast and a meatier plot and peeling back her characters’ layers. Readers will have to stick with this to get to the goods. Desperate for a baby, a single woman attempts to find a partner through a website for potential co-parents--but when feelings develop, things get complicated. Lucie Yi knows she wants a child, but her journey to parenthood has been bumpy. After having a miscarriage, she suffers another devastating blow when her boyfriend cheats on her. She flees Singapore to work in New York City, where she can deal with her grief far away from reminders of her old life. But with her biological clock ticking louder and louder, Lucie knows she needs to act fast if she wants the baby she's always dreamed of. The dating pool isn't offering any potential fathers, but then she discovers Co-Family.com, a platform that one of her friends describes as "Tinder for would-be parents." A platonic co-parenting situation is just what Lucie wants--she can't deal with another heartbreak. When she meets Collin, she knows he'll make the perfect father for her child. He's willing to move to Singapore, where she wants to raise their child, and best of all, she doesn't have any pesky feelings for him. But when she gets pregnant and they make the move back to her home country, things get complicated. Because of the intense social stigma around unwed mothers in Singapore, Lucie and Collin have to tell her parents that they're going to get married. And then Lucie's cheating ex, Mark, shows up. He claims he's changed and wants to be together, but spending so much time with Collin has made Lucie realize that she might want other things. Should Lucie take the unconventional path with Collin and risk screwing up their platonic co-parenting situation, or should she fall into the safe comfort of Mark's arms? Ho delicately balances grief, romance, and humor. There are many laugh-out-loud lines (including Lucie's thoughts as her body changes during pregnancy), but Lucie's sorrow over what she lost--both a baby and her imagined future--always rings true. This is best shown in a particularly touching scene in which Lucie attends a support group for grieving parents. A beautiful exploration of both grief and romance starring a lovably hilarious heroine.

Starred review from May 15, 2022
Frank talk about monthly cycles, IVF, money, and personal values are part of an unconventional co-parenting agreement in Malaysian author Ho's sensitive portrayal of two people who long to be parents but are not able to follow the usual route of love and children with a committed partner. Lucie Yi is an international tax consultant temporarily working in New York City and an ambitious and minimalist perfectionist. Colin Read is a software engineer who's charming, laid-back, and loves dance and yoga, but severe nut allergies and lactose intolerance make his life difficult. They match through a co-parenting website and find themselves instantly compatible though with vastly differing parenting styles. They commit to raising their child in Singapore, which is her home and where he wants to connect with his dad. Conservative Singaporean society and her parents frown on her extramarital pregnancy and the co-parenting decision. How Lucie and Colin negotiate their personal and familial priorities forms the fulcrum of the story. Their unwritten agreement includes dating other people, and Lucie is once again tempted by her ex-fianc, whom she has forgiven, but she is also captivated by Colin. Who will she choose? As in her stellar debut, Last Tang Standing (2020), Ho skillfully employs humor to make heartbreaking truths more bearable.
