Description

From New York Times bestselling author Mariah Stewart comes a new chapter in her celebrated Chesapeake Diaries series, featuring her signature "rich characterization, charming setting, and a romance you'll never forget" (Robyn Carr, #1 New York Times bestselling author).
Architect Cassidy Logan has sworn off good-looking adventurers. Newly divorced, she's focused on building ecologically friendly, historically accurate homes on the Chesapeake Bay for her father's construction company. Traveling to Cannonball Island—where there has been no new construction in nearly one hundred years—Cass is sensitive to the heritage of the island, and has come up with plans so perfect she's determined to buy a home for herself. Even the fact that Owen Parker—a local who she dismisses as a lightweight and a player—seems to be everywhere isn't enough to deter her from building her dream house.

Owen Parker is and always has been sinfully handsome and wickedly clever, a magnet for mischief as well as girls. He's a rolling stone, going and doing whatever appeals to him, from flying a mail plane in Alaska, to working on a cattle ranch in Australia, a shrimp boat in Louisiana, and surfing and diving in Costa Rica. When an old friend offers him a job salvaging a sunken ship on the Chesapeake Bay, Owen gladly accepts. Something has been telling him it was time to head home to Cannonball Island, and a job is as good an excuse as any. And he's totally smitten by the pretty architect on the scene, but it seems he's finally met a woman who's immune to his charms. Sooner or later, Owen will have to face the reason why he always runs, because this time, leaving just might be harder than staying.

When playboy drifter and professional diver Owen Parker returns home to Cannonball Island, off the coast of Maryland, for another diving expedition, he plans to do what he always does: get the job done and be on his way. With restless feet and a soul to match, not even the urging of his sharp-witted great-grandmother, Ruby “Gigi” Carter, or his bubbly sister, Lis, could convince him to stay put. Architect Cass Logan, who’s new to the island, is all too familiar with wanderlust-plagued men, thanks to her career soldier ex-husband. Cass needs and wants stability. When she and Owen team up to clean up abandoned graves on the island, she’s determined not to fall for him, regardless of how good-looking, intelligent, and thoughtful he is. But soon, yard work leads to tours and dinner dates, and they’re both hooked. Just when Owen thinks he can settle down, a revelation leaves him fighting for the life he never knew he wanted. Stewart succeeds in giving both Owen and Cass a smooth blend of strength and vulnerability, and the setting of this heartwarming romance will draw readers in with its island-life charm. A charming world traveler sets his sights on an intelligent architect who has no time for courtship.Owen Parker has spent most of his 38 years traveling and resisting his great-grandmother's urges for him to settle down. He's lived and worked in places like Alaska, Australia, and Costa Rica, but there's something that calls him home to Cannonball Island, a close-knit community near Chesapeake Bay, where his great-grandmother runs the local general store. Owen's friend Jared Chandler has a diving job for him, but when the Maryland Historical Society gets wind that there may be something important lurking in the Chesapeake's murky waters, Owen has to hold off. Also in town is Cass Logan, an architect heading up a multimillion dollar development deal to renovate the abandoned, wind- and sea-damaged homes along Cannonball Island's shore. Unfortunately, the Historical Society's decision to halt any disturbances to the water until scans and tests can be done has put the project on hold. After a heartbreaking but amicable divorce from her college sweetheart, Cass is thankful for the distractions the small island provides, and while she's not exactly itching to get back into the dating game, she's noticed Owen's attention on her more than once. Owen and Cass are both hesitant to start a relationship; Owen is wary of putting down roots, and Cass is still coming to terms with her divorce. Living in such a small and oftentimes meddling community, Cass and Owen are thrown into each other's paths over and over again. The romance is slow and sweet; readers who vie for more sexual tension between main characters may find this a little too tepid. However, the lack of unnecessary melodrama, angst, and over-the-top gestures makes this a refreshing contemporary romance between two adults who act as such. Stewart's (Last Chance Matinee, 2017, etc.) latest is an endearing beachside romance.
