SeRine kicks off her Protect and Serve series with this serviceable but unpolished contemporary. After three years in New Orleans and a difficult investigation that went nowhere, FBI agent Kyle Dawson is reassigned back to Indiana, where his three brothers and father are respected law enforcement officers. Wanting to reconnect with his ex-lover, sheriff’s investigator Abby Morrow, Kyle leaves her a voice mail, even though she broke his heart. When she tells him that her sister has been kidnapped and Abby and her nephew are in mortal danger, Kyle steps in to help, and Abby and Kyle soon passionately pick up where they left off. Hired assassins, sex trafficking, grisly text messages, and savvy computer work all lead Kyle to suspect that his New Orleans case and Abby’s family troubles are (of course) connected. The book offers suspense and sexual encounters in equal abundance, with villains aplenty. Law enforcement enthusiasts will respect SeRine’s deft descriptions of police work, but romance devotees might find the lust and endearments somewhat repetitive and heavy-handed. After an investigation goes wrong in New Orleans, FBI agent Kyle Dawson is transferred back to his hometown, where he previously left behind Abby Morrow, the only woman he's ever loved, and earned the wrath of his father and a brother for turning his back on the local family law-enforcement operation in the sheriff's office. When Abby's computer-records analysis for a client identifies involvement in human trafficking, her sister is kidnapped to force Abby to turn over the incriminating data. Kyle gets involved because there are signs that, besides his concern for Abby, this is related to the New Orleans case. How they identify and catch the bad guy, make peace with Kyle's father, and reconcile with each other, once Abby confesses the real reason she let Kyle leave three years ago, fills the rest of the novel. Serine begins her Protect and Serve romantic-suspense series with a satisfying romance featuring good sex scenes and the usual damsel-in-distress situation for a returning hero.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2015, American Library Association.)
