Description

Tenaya has never left Yosemite Valley. He was born in a car by the Merced River, and grew up in a hidden camp with his parents, surviving on fish, acorns, and unfinished food thrown away by the park's millions of tourists. But despite its splendor, Tenaya's Yosemite is a visceral place of opposites, at once beautiful, dangerous, and violent. When he meets Lucy, a young woman from the south side of the park, Tenaya must choose between this new relationship and the Valley, terrorism and legend, the sacred versus the material. In this modern retelling of Samson and Delilah, Graphic the Valley explores mythical strength, worldly greed, love, lust, and epic destruction. Set entirely in the majestic Yosemite Valley, Hoffmeister recalls Edward Abbey's vivid sense of place and urgent call for preservation of one of the world's most spectacular sites.

A couple illegally inhabits the Yosemite valley in camps and debri shelters, bearing and raising a child who grows to be a new type of Native American in Hoffmeister’s debut novel. At the age of 19, Tenaya has never left Yosemite. He was born in a car and brought straight to the valley, educated with stories from books and his father’s mythical-sounding memory. He learns how to survive in the wilderness with nothing but himself. But when he takes a job clearing slash off the Tioga Road and meets Lucy, a secret relationship blossoms which leads to pregnancy and a controversial public engagement. The couple’s dreams turn sour as both families manipulate the young bride and groom during marriage ceremonies to embarrass the other side, escalating towards violence and ending in tragedy. Tenaya is left with the responsibility of protecting his beloved valley, where construction and contracts are moving in to create a theme park and destroy his home. With refreshingly fundamental first person narration and unusual character development, stripped in knowledge and language of anything but the necessary, each page of this novel illuminates its reader’s imagination with both tenacity and innocence.

Starred review from July 1, 2013
Eighteen-year-old Tenaya was born in a car in Yosemite National Park, and he's lived there ever since, camping illegally with his father and mother. A descendant of the valley's original inhabitants, the Yosemiti, he's been schooled in the lore of his people: defeated by soldiers aided by a rival tribe, the Miwok, the Yosemiti were written out of the park's history in all but name. But the past is present, and when Tenaya falls in love with Lucy, a Miwok, he learns Lucy's father has plans that may involve a second betrayal of the valley. With a defeated chief as his namesake, Tenaya feels destined to do something about it. This fascinating novel is both an outsider's coming-of-age story, an introduction to the so-called dirtbag lifestyle, and a deeper meditation on the beauty of the wild world. Can we own nature? Can we manage it? The story meanders a bit, and a Samson-and-Delilah angle probably isn't necessary, but the images, sometimes mythic, sometimes mundane, are unforgettable: a young man unable to leave a heartbreakingly beautiful place, foraging in dumpsters while tourist children watch videos in their tents. Passionately conceived, arrestingly original, this will be life changing for some readers.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2013, American Library Association.)
