At the outset of Randisi’s meandering seventh Rat Pack mystery (after 2011’s Fly Me to the Morgue), Sands Casino pit boss Eddie Gianelli squelches a sleazy photographer who’s trying to blackmail Abby Dalton, Joey Bishop’s TV wife. In the wake of the JFK assassination, which hits Frank Sinatra hard, Eddie has to escape a frame for murder while also helping to solve the kidnapping of Sinatra’s 19-year-old son, Frankie. Saving his own neck is important, but good-hearted Eddie wants to prevent Sinatra from starting a bloodbath by sending his Mafia buddies after the kidnappers. The relatively small role in the ramshackle plot that other members of the Rat Pack play diminishes interest, but the action comes to life whenever Eddie’s mammoth mob enforcer friend, Jerry Epstein, lumbers into view. As in the novel’s Vegas/Reno setting, glitter trumps content. Agent: Dominick Abel, Dominick Abel Literary.

For Americans who loved or admired John F. Kennedy, 1963 was indeed a very bad year, but it doesn't seem to have been so hard on Kennedy's friend Frank Sinatra, despite the kidnapping of his son Frank Jr. Though he's a friend of Frank's, it takes quite a while for Sands pit boss Eddie Gianelli to get a call from him. First, Eddie's got to help Joey Bishop's co-star Abby Dalton recover some indiscreet pictures photographer Barney Irwin had snapped of her when she was young, innocent and naked. Backed up by Brooklyn behemoth Jerry Epstein, Eddie breaks into Barney's place but finds nothing more risque than cheesecake shots. So, when Barney holds out for more money than Abby's willing to pay, Eddie gets Jerry to lean on Barney. This whole contretemps, complete with gunsels and murder, is no more than a curtain raiser for the abduction of Frank Sinatra Jr. by a crew that demands $240,000(?!) for his safe return. Distraught, Frank begs Eddie to make the drop-off, and the result is gratifyingly routine for the good guys, though a little frustrating for thrill-seeking readers. Eddie steadfastly insists that he's not a private eye, and indeed, this time his detection is limited to noticing and interpreting a list of names on a sheet of paper intriguingly headed "Nov. 22." Little mystery and less suspense. But Eddie's relaxed recollections of his seventh canter around the Vegas nostalgia track (Fly Me to the Morgue, 2011, etc.) are a perfect nightcap for fans who don't want to elevate their pulse rate before dropping off to sleep.COPYRIGHT(2012) Kirkus Reviews, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.

Eddie Gianelli, Vegas pit boss and unofficial fixer for the Rat Pack, rises to the call when Joey Bishop's TV wife, Abby Dalton, needs help with a blackmailer. That's easy peasy for a man of Eddie's unconventional talents, but the case leads him into a very different kettle of fish: the kidnapping of Frank Sinatra's son. Then there's the little matter of the murder of a Vegas lowlife, who was in the employ of Dalton's blackmailer. Unfortunately, the cops like Eddie for that one. Randisi's series is never less than entertainingEddie and his tough-guy pal Jerry Epstein are a fine pair of Everymen cavorting with the stars, and the Rat Packers are typically portrayed with full-bodied gusto. This time, though, Randisi paints himself into a bit of a corner: Bishop is the least interesting Rat Packer; Dalton is a grade-D celeb; and the Sinatra kidnapping story doesn't give Frank much to do except fret. Still, Randisi's take on Vegas in its prime is always a treat, and the light, breezy style delivers its own brand of Nelson Riddle, toe-tapping pleasure.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2012, American Library Association.)
