Description
A southern Debbie Macomber, but with a flair all her own.—Karin GillespieIn this poignant novel set amid the close-knit residents of Cedar Key, Florida, New York Times bestselling author Terri DuLong creates a story of old wounds healed—and bright new beginnings . . .Everyone has been eagerly awaiting the opening of Cedar Key's newest shop, Berkley's Chocolates & Gems. For Berkley Whitmore, moving to the peaceful Florida island is more than a business opportunity. Beneath the bright purple streak in her dark hair lies a woman struggling with self-doubt. In Cedar Key, Berkley hopes to uncover the secrets that rippled through her mother's life, and in time, perhaps fill the gaps in her own. Berkley's mouthwatering truffles and quirky charm soon draw a wide circle of friends—including the knitting enthusiasts who purchase yarn spun from her two alpacas. To her surprise, Berkley also attracts the admiration of Saxton Tate III, an English mystery author. And with the help of an old-timer local, she begins to piece together the truth about her mother and estranged father. Understanding the past brings a glimpse of what her future could be—if she accepts the love borne on the soft island breeze, and the happiness she's been seeking for so long . . ."DuLong brings us a heartwarming story with genuine characters. . .. Tender and poignant, perfect for those who love knitting as well as the bonds between women." –RT Book Reviews (4 Stars) on Sunrise on Cedar Key"A delightful addition to that genre of needlecraft-inspired books." —Library Journal on Casting About"You'll fall instantly in love with Cedar Key and this homespun knitting community, crafted with expert hands." —New York Times bestselling author, Lori Wilde

Berkley Whitmore uproots her life and leaves her successful Massachusetts chocolate shop behind when she moves to a small island, in DuLong’s follow-up to Sunrise on Cedar Key. When she was very young, Berkley’s mother spent a summer on the island of Cedar Key, Fla., leaving Berkley in the care of her grandmother on the mainland. Never able to shed the feelings of abandonment that summer created, Berkley, after her mother’s death, relocates to the island herself, where she opens a new chocolate shop, starts a romance with a local author, and makes friends, but comes no closer to solving the mystery around the summer that her mother spent there long ago. When she does discover clues about the reasons behind her mother’s flight, which reveal long-held lies about her father’s death, Berkley has to summon the strength to confront her past and move on. DuLong returns to the sedate Cedar Key and its comfortable, supportive characters, a familiarity that may draw past readers back. New readers, however, will find little to engage. Berkley’s “magical” chocolates are too close to those of Chocolat and the novel’s less sugary elements are nearly as familiar.

After her mother dies, Berkley Whitmore moves to Cedar Key, Fla., to open a chocolate shop, hoping to find the answers to a family mystery she's uncovered; along the way, she'll find the home she's always dreamed of, with a new community of friends and the possibility of true love. Berkley's lived her 40-something years in New England, working with her mother and grandmother in the family chocolate business. After her mother dies, she finds a stack of postcards that lead her to the small island community of Cedar Key, where her mother apparently spent a number of months without Berkley, who was 5 at the time. Convinced the mystery has some significance and will help her overcome some of her ambivalence toward her mother, she begins to ask questions of the friendly, close-knit community. The move and the quest bring her closer to an aunt she's never really known, the other business owners in Cedar Key and to a local author she feels she can fall in love with. She's happier than she's ever been, and her chocolates seem to be having a positive influence on the town too. Despite its intriguing premise, a cozy, small-town backdrop, and even the hint of some magic, this book fails to rise to its potential. The narrative tells rather than shows nearly every emotional element of the plot, and what could be an interesting unveiling of the mystery at the center of the story is so poorly handled that the answers are dumped together in an amateurish way, as well as blunted by the awkward and ham-fisted "climax" scene. The internal and external dialogue is often generic and unrealistic, and the characters are simplistic and two-dimensional. Even the core romance lacks tension, either emotional or sexual, and there doesn't seem to be much in the way of conflict throughout most of the book, other than The Mystery, which the main character makes no real progress on until near the end of the book, when suddenly all the pieces fall into place, though, it's not completely clear why some of those same pieces couldn't have assembled themselves more than 100 pages earlier. Lackluster writing and storytelling, as well as inconsistent plot elements, diminish the book's impact, but many romance and DuLong fans will find this sweet story, set in a friendly community with some unique, texturizing details, enough to keep them interested.
