Verdict: A practical guide to coping with the grief of death or divorce, complemented by excellent exercises for finding peace and regaining energy. Highly recommended for public library and other self-help collections. Background: In this updated classic, James and Friedman (founders, Grief Recovery Institute; coauthors, When Children Grieve) argue that mourning is an emotional rather than an intellectual experience. Instead of working toward closure, the grieving are encouraged to examine their relationships with their lost loved ones and address any unresolved issues. The authors present effective tools for dealing with painful emotions (e.g., relationship graph, completion letter) and conclude with a discussion of other types of loss (e.g., career change, infertility and health issues, loss of faith).-Antoinette Brinkman, M.L.S., Evansville, INCopyright 2009 Library Journal, LLC Used with permission.
