Lee creates believable distinctions between the primary protagonists, FBI agent Lucy Kincaid and investigative journalist Maxine Revere. When skeletal remains are found, Kincaid is called in to investigate a three-year-old disappearance. Revere is looking into a possible false confession in a recent murder. Lee's narration makes Kincaid come across as competent, hardworking, and compassionate. Lee also captures Revere's intelligence and determination.
