The Blonde
(Adobe EPUB eBook, Kindle Book, OverDrive Read)
In 1947, a young, unknown Norma Jeane Baker meets a mysterious man in Los Angeles who transforms her into Marilyn Monroe, the star. Twelve years later he comes back for his repayment, and Marilyn is given her first assignment from the KGB: uncover something about JFK that no one else knows.
But a simple job turns complicated when Marilyn falls in love with the bright young President, and learns of plans to assassinate Kennedy. More than anything, Marilyn wants to escape her Soviet handlers and save her love — and herself. Desperate, ruthless and brilliant, what she does next will leave readers reeling.
From New York Times bestselling author Anna Godbersen comes a whip-smart re-imagining of the life of Marilyn Monroe, set in a world of silver screen glamour and political intrigue. At once a crackling portrayal of Old Hollywood, an intimate portrait of the larger-than-life star, and a cat-and-mouse thriller, The Blonde is history rewritten as it could have — and might have been.

Children’s author Godbersen (The Luxe) makes her adult debut with an engaging what-if thriller and love story. In New York City in March 1959, a Soviet intelligence agent, who happens to have been responsible for boosting Marilyn Monroe’s movie career in 1947, recruits the megastar to gather information on up-and-coming politician John Kennedy. In exchange, the Russian agent promises to reunite Monroe with her long-lost father. Monroe travels to Chicago, where she easily gains the future president’s attention at a hotel restaurant. They begin an affair that continues into the White House. The unlikely plot developments leading up to J.F.K.’s assassination in Dallas do nothing to diminish the author’s memorable warts-and-all portrayal of Monroe, alone and unhappy despite her fame and her celebrity husbands. The prose captures the atmosphere surrounding Hollywood at the time perfectly (e.g., some hangers-on at a party are “not quite actresses and not entirely prostitutes”). Agent: Jennifer Rudolph Walsh, WME.

What if Marilyn Monroe had been a Soviet spy sent to seduce JFK and to coax out his secrets? Here the blonde bombshell is initially recruited as a teenager and set on the road to stardom until payment comes due at the height of the Cold War in 1959. Then, lured further by the promise of meeting the father she never knew, Marilyn sets out to snare the charismatic senator from Massachusetts, letting nature, along with her lush body, take its course. What she doesn't bank on is falling in love. In Godbersen's telling, Marilyn is street smart under her veneer of navet' (with an agent assigned to her in Hoover's FBI); Kennedy is a reckless womanizer reined in by brother Bobby; and both JFK and MM find their affair turning unexpectedly emotional. In her adult-fiction debut, YA author Godbersen puts her own spin on history, as a love story with a twist turns thriller. More fodder for the insatiably curious followers of both these larger-than-life main characters.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2014, American Library Association.)

Since Marilyn Monroe's death in 1962, she's been the subject of countless coffee-table books and Hollywood biopics; she's been dissected by everyone from Norman Mailer to Gloria Steinem, fictionalized by Joyce Carol Oates ("Blonde"), and her life told from the point of view of her dog ("The Life and Opinions of Maf the Dog"). It's safe to say then that she hasn't been forgotten. The particular, and unconvincing, premise in this fictionalized account is that vulnerable and drugged Marilyn is a Soviet agent. Recruited at Schwab's drugstore as a budding starlet, she is later approached to ingratiate herself with John F. Kennedy, which she does with an admirable enthusiasm, all the while shooting "The Misfits", divorcing playwright Arthur Miller, carrying on affairs with Yves Montand and Frank Sinatra, trying to deal with her drug addiction, and spending a spell in a psychiatric clinic. No wonder she (and we) might look a trifle drawn by the end. VERDICT This is billed as Godbersen's "debut adult novel" (she's the author of several successful YA books), but the story, by and large, is one that's already been done to death. That said, if it does lead some of the author's fans to seek out "Some Like It Hot", it won't have been for nought.--Bob Lunn, Kansas City, MOCopyright 2014 Library Journal, LLC Used with permission.
