Description

Making rounds to homes one wet spring morning, veterinarian Dr. Kate Turner visits an estate whose owners breed champion Cavalier King Charles spaniels. Instead of sharing traditional tea with the couple, she confronts a bloody scene of bodies and twenty-seven blue-ribbon dogs running wild.

Police initially suspect a murder-suicide, but when Dr. Kate proves the famous best-in-show champion is missing, a darker reality intrudes. She remembers her grandfather saying that there are two motives for murder—love and money. While treating local pets, Dr. Kate discovers suspects and motives everywhere in this charming town filled with people who wanted the couple dead.

Was the couple murdered for money their champion could bring to another breeder? How is their daughter, anxious to rid herself of the pampered dogs, handling the wealth she inherits? Would the celebrity filmmaker living nearby kill to end a multi-million dollar lawsuit? Did long-buried personal secrets cause the deaths? And what's going on at the office behind her back? Is Dr. Kate now in danger?

We are delighted to discover and publish first-time mystery writer Eileen Brady, D.V.M. Her characters, style, and storytelling bring authenticity and atmosphere to this new "pet noir" series.

        February 24, 2014
Brady’s enjoyable, leisurely paced first novel introduces Dr. Kate Turner, who, like Brady herself, is a veterinarian. When Kate pays a house call on Vivian and Thomas Langhorne, who breed and raise champion Cavalier King Charles spaniels, she discovers the dead bodies of the elderly couple. The police call it murder-suicide, but Kate’s not so sure. In the course of her rounds, Kate discovers that many residents of Oak Falls, N.Y., had good reason to do them in, ranging from the heartlessly competitive dog show grande dame to the even more heartless, money-grubbing Langhorne daughter with a checkered legal past. Readers will want to see more of the likable Kate, who, as she snoops and doctors, provides an inside look at quirky pet owners and the oft-satirized dog show set (shoe polish shines a nose!). She even imparts wisdom on such matters as clipping parrot toe nails and the importance of doggie weight loss diets.

        March 15, 2014
A veterinarian moves to a small town whose residents have plenty to hide. Kate Turner abandoned Long Island and a romance gone bad for the lovely Hudson River town of Oak Falls; she's subbing for Doc Anderson, who's on a trip around the world. Her new routine is soon spectacularly disrupted when she makes a house call and discovers two dead bodies--Vivian and Thomas Langthorne, whose lives revolved around their kennel of top-notch Cavalier King Charles spaniels. They would never have left their 27 valuable dogs running around the house, which is how Kate finds them. Unable to accept the police theory of murder-suicide, Kate begins to snoop for clues. She's deeply upset when the Langthornes' adopted daughter, Pippi, quickly sells all her parents' beloved dogs. Their premier spaniel, Charles Too, fetches $1 million dollars from a Japanese breeder--a high price indeed for a fake, although Kate is unable to prove her suspicion. Soon, one of the rival breeders who bought some of the Langthorne dogs is shot (though not killed) at a dog show. Kate's questions reveal that an awful lot of people had motives for murdering the dislikable Langthornes. As Kate goes about her daily routine, caring for grumpy dogs, cats, hamsters and parrots is the least of her problems. If she gets too close to solving the case, a determined killer may mark her for murder. Kate's debut has plenty to offer pet lovers and mystery mavens alike.

Starred review from April 1, 2014

Show dog business might be ruthless, but the shooting deaths of a local couple high in the industry's ranks stuns not just Dr. Kate Turner, the veterinarian who finds them, but the whole community. The police quickly rule it murder-suicide, but Kate thinks that unlikely, mostly because the canines were loose in the house. When another dog breeder is shot and wounded at a regional show, Kate's suspicions only deepen. The trouble is, she's the newcomer in town and not sure whom she can trust--other than the animals--at this point. Consulting with her grandfather, a retired NYFD arson investigator, by phone, she picks up some investigative tips. But she needs to watch her back because someone is tired of her nosiness. VERDICT Winner of the Poisoned Pen Discover Writers Contest, Brady's series debut is stellar. She weaves in details about the veterinary practice without overwhelming the plot, and the scenic Hudson River setting (think Rhinebeck) enhances the mystery. Recommend for Beth Groundwater readers: gentle but exciting, too.
