Description
The fourth Sergeant George Sueño Investigation
Seoul, 1970s: As North Korea menaces and Vietnam burns, US 8th Army CID agent Sergeant George Sueño and his partner, Ernie Bascom, weave through back alleys and bordellos, trying to tip the scales of justice back in the right direction. This time, they’re not just pursuing criminals—they’re chasing themselves. Homicidal thieves have gotten hold of George’s badge and are using it to trick their victims for just long enough to strike—with his gun. The army wants the equipment accounted for, and the ID and weapon recovered. George and Ernie want to salvage their reputation, such as it is—and to stop the cold-blooded killings being committed in their names.

After picking up a new bar "hostess," George Sueo, series criminal investigator ("Buddha's Money") for the U.S. Army in South Korea, is relieved of his wallet, badge, and gun in a mugging. Because he was drugged and because gun possession is strictly controlled in 1974, the incident strikes George as a set-up. He and partner Ernie soon find themselves investigating the murder of a young woman in a gambling club -shot with George's gun. The Korean National Police pressure for a quick resolution, especially because the perpetrators, who are foreigners, resemble George and Ernie. Racial differences, communication complexities, and bordello-and-bar backgrounds contrast with the protagonists' inherent goodness. Readers who like their police procedurals with a foreign flavor will enjoy. Limó n lives in Seattle. For all collections. [See Mystery Prepub, "LJ "5/1/05.]

        September 1, 2005
It's been seven years since Army CID cops George Sueno and Ernie Bascom hit the streets of Seoul (since 1998's " Buddha's Money)" , but nothing much has changed. They're still a couple of mismatched coppers, Korea is still a political and social mess, and justice remains a very fluid concept. It's September 1974. George wakes up in an alley. He has got a few cuts and bruises, but it's what he doesn't have that's of primary importance: his gun and his badge. Stolen, apparently. Both gun and badge are used not too long after in a casino robbery by two men who looked a lot like Sueno and Bascom. It's pretty clear that George was targeted, but can he and Ernie figure out whodunit and why before even worse things happen? As usual, Limon paints a picture of Korea in the mid-1970s that is so detailed and richly atmospheric that the reader's senses are flooded with the sounds, smells, and tastes of the place. Fans of the Sueno-Bascom series, who have been waiting eagerly for a new novel, can relax. It was well worth the wait.
