Description

Everyone knows the Greenleaf family puts the "Hell" in Hellcat Canyon—legend has it the only way they ever leave is in a cop car or a casket. But Glory Greenleaf has a different getaway vehicle in mind: her guitar.

She has a Texas-sized talent and the ambition (and attitude) to match, but only two people have ever believed in her: her brother, who's in jail, and his best friend . . . who put him there.

Sheriff Eli Barlow has secretly been in love with Glory since he was twelve years old. Which is how he knows her head is as hard as her heart is soft—and why she can't forgive him for fracturing her family . . . or forget that night they surrendered to an explosive, long-simmering passion. But when a betrayal threatens Glory's big break, Eli will risk everything to make it right . . . because the best way to love the girl from Whiskey Creek might mean setting her free forever.

Long's second foray into contemporary romance is a study in longing and angst... the journey... is exquisite, combining humor and intensity with consummate writing and storytelling and a musical leitmotif that ratchets up the sexual tension as effectively as Bolero. Long’s second foray into contemporary romance (after Hot in Hellcat Canyon) continues to impress with sparkling prose, witty scenes of small-town California, and meaningful romantic conflict. Glory Greenleaf’s lifelong love for Eli Barlow was damaged when Eli arrested her brother for meth transportation. Eli earns professional commendation for the arrest, but it destroys his budding romance with Glory. Her money woes restrict her choices; trapped in Hellcat Canyon with a bad image, she can only find happiness through sharing her passionate music with adoring audiences. Both Eli and Glory attempt to move on romantically, but their unresolved issues lead only to repeated frustrating encounters with each other. A scheduled concert of big names brings them and the whole town together, and the cascading events that follow lead to both hope and despair. The ending of this sweet tale surprises and satisfies. Glory Greenleaf has big dreams and a penchant for drama, while Deputy Sheriff Eli Barlow believes in law, order, and Glory's incandescent talent, so when their soul-scorching attraction interferes with her big break, Eli realizes he may love her too much to hold on to her.Eli and Glory have been in each other's orbits since childhood, when Eli became best friends with Glory's brother, Jonah. The Greenleafs were chaos and quicksilver, quite different from the quiet order of his own home. But where Glory always had her music and its dedication and discipline, Jonah was about shortcuts and the easiest way to get what he wanted. Eli and Glory have been dancing around each other for years, not yet ready to explore their deep emotional connection, not to mention their chemistry, until they finally shared a toe-curling kiss at a party, and years of awareness exploded. Two days later, Eli arrested Jonah for transporting meth. Glory stopped talking to him, while her plans to leave town and follow her dreams were cut short. Now, nearly a year later, movie star Franco Francone is in town and interested in helping Glory reach for the stars, given she's willing to reach for him. And a pretty little blonde is interested in Eli. Eli and Glory cross paths as they spend time with other people, even while they're still hyperaware of each other. Glory's hopes for stardom inch ever closer, with nudges from friends, but she and Eli have to resolve their feelings for each other before either of them can move forward. Historical favorite Long's (Hot in Hellcat Canyon, 2016, etc.) second foray into contemporary romance is a study in longing and angst, with Eli and Glory awash in emotional confusion yet so perfectly attuned to each other that there's no question they'll figure it out, despite the taut conflict. The journey, however, is exquisite, combining humor and intensity with consummate writing and storytelling and a musical leitmotif that ratchets up the sexual tension as effectively as Bolero. A splendid, delectable romance.

Sheriff Eli Barlow has loved musician and songwriter Glory Greenleaf since childhood. Sadly, when he arrests her brother, Jonah, on a drug charge and Jonah goes to prison, their relationship takes a dive and Glory's hopes of escaping Hellcat Canyon and following her musical dreams disappear along with it. Music is Glory's life, and Eli never stops believing in her talent. When her big chance finally does arrive and disaster threatens, he's not above pushing a few boundaries and bending a few rules. VERDICT A sassy, talented, tough-minded gal who knows what she wants and a caring, by-the-book guy who always has her back finally give in to their feelings in this poignant, intense, character-driven story. The musical descriptions are so vivid, fans will wish they could actually download the songs. Beautifully done. Long (Hot in Hellcat Canyon) lives in Northern California.
