Description
A heartfelt, witty, and thought-provoking YA love story about two teens who fall for each other while forced apart during quarantine, written by two New York Times bestselling authors, and for fans of Five Feet Apart, Anna and the French Kiss, and My Life Next Door
Maxine and Jonah meet in the canned goods aisle just as California is going into lockdown. Max’s part-time job as a personal grocery shopper is about to transform into a hellish gauntlet. Jonah’s preexisting anxiety is about to become an epic daily struggle. As Max and Jonah get to know each other through FaceTime dates, socially distanced playground hangs, and the escalating heartbreaks of the pandemic, they’re pushed apart by what they don’t share and pulled closer by what they do.
As thoughtful, probing, and informed as it is buoyant, romantic, and funny, Hello (From Here) cuts across differences in class, privilege, and mental health, all thrown into stark relief by the COVID-19 pandemic. Here’s a novel that looks at the first two months of the quarantine, and adds falling in love to the mess.

Starred review from August 2, 2021
It’s meet-cute pandemic style as Maxine “Max” Mauro and Jonah Stephens trade toilet paper for Clorox wipes the day that Los Angeles goes into lockdown. The white 17-year-olds are aware of each other’s looks and humor, but though they’re shopping at the same store, they’re entering the pandemic in different situations: Max needs the money she gets from delivering groceries to pay for college and help out her single mother—she has to go out, regardless of the risks. More privileged Jonah, meanwhile, diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder and grieving the death of his mother, has to be extra careful because his sister is immunocompromised. Baker (Whisper Network, for adults) and King (Sara and the Search for Normal) set their story in the early-Covid days of uncertainty and limited information, showing different kinds of vulnerability—all while writing a satisfyingly banter-filled rom-com told in alternating voices and filled with technological workarounds to the difficulty of in-person meetings (including Max’s shopping app). While a side plot involving an old Hollywood scandal peters out, Max and Jonah’s struggles with romance, their families, and their individually complicated circumstances make for a timely story that offers a creative take on how hope and romance can persist in difficult times. Ages 12–up. Agents: (for Chandler) Daniel Lazar, Writers House; (for Wesley) Brianne Johnson, Writers House.

Two teens get romantic in March 2020. Maxine and Jonah first meet bumping into each other in the grocery store just as the world is starting to come to an end. It's early 2020, and California's going into lockdown to stop the spread of Covid-19. Jonah's been an anxious mess even before the deadly virus hit American shores, and Maxine (or as she prefers, Max) has been barely hanging on with a part-time gig buying other people's groceries. The pair strike up some witty repartee over toilet paper that tips into full-on flirtation, eventually pushing them into the unlucky task of starting a relationship just as everyone's trying to keep away from one another. As the two teens Zoom and text their way through the pandemic, class differences, mental health issues, and good old-fashioned melodrama rear their heads. The romance is sweet, and the novelty of the pandemic's early days is effectively rendered, but readers' mileage may vary when it comes to reliving the anxious second quarter of 2020. The authors never push the virus element too hard, smartly centering Max and Jonah's relationship as a fairly typical getting-to-know-you courtship with a handful more speed bumps. The end result is a quiet exploration of two teens going through some heady times, the sort of read that will be appreciated, if not now, then in a year or two. Max and Jonah are presumed White. A gentle romance set against a bummer of a backdrop. (content notes) (Romance. 14-18)

Gr 9 Up-Max and Jonah are trying to make sense of their lives when they are thrust into the COVID-19 quarantine. Max, who helps support her mom and is saving money for college, is determined to continue working as the world around her shuts down. While in the supermarket preparing an order, she meets Jonah and is intrigued by his quirky demeanor. When she delivers groceries to his neighbor, she sees Jonah watching her through the window and the two begin an online friendship that distracts them from the restrictions around them. Jonah, who is grieving for his mother and gets panic attacks, becomes infatuated with Max. When Max learns that a longtime customer of hers is in the hospital, she enlists Jonah's help to reunite her customer with an old flame. As the two make a plan, circumstances threaten the trust that they were slowly building. The novel portrays the difficulties that teens have faced during the pandemic, presenting the manifestations of isolation, fear, and uncertainty. While the authors create a realistic dynamic between the two main characters and highlight important issues, such as mental health and loss, they also include many of the stress-inducing details related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Though some teens may be OK with reading about the trauma, many may be too overwhelmed with the recent past for a story in which the pandemic plays such a large role. VERDICT A realistic teen romance that touches on important issues but might be too topical for some teens, this is a general purchase.-Karin Greenberg, Manhasset H.S., NY

Grades 8-11 While "the course of true love never did run smooth," consider the speed bumps, potholes, and roadblocks to romance at the beginning of a global pandemic lockdown. Proximity to another person? Uncomfortable. Holding hands? Ill-advised. Kissing? Potentially lethal. But after Jonah, whose family is wealthy, encounters Maxine, he longs to see her again. She's a hard-working personal shopper-grocery-delivery driver whose college fund is being depleted to help Mom pay the rent. Still dealing with his mother's death after three years, Jonah is prone to anxiety and panic attacks. Through text messages and virtual visits, they gradually get to know each other better, but a rash decision during a crisis almost destroys their hopes for happiness. The novel unfolds in two voices with Jonah and Max narrating alternate chapters, and it becomes increasingly engaging as the story moves along. The portrayals of both Max's and Jonah's family relationships are unusually strong and helpful in shedding light on their characters. Not your typical romantic comedy, Baker and King's collaborative novel offers a timely update of the genre.
