- bioText: Carlene O'Connor comes from a long line of Irish storytellers. Her great-grandmother emigrated from Ireland to America during the Troubles, and the stories have been flowing ever since. Of all the places across the pond she's wandered, she fell most in love with a walled town in County Limerick and was inspired to create the town of Kilbane, County Cork. She currently divides her time between New York and the Emerald Isle.

- Family is everything to Siobhán: her five siblings; her dear departed mother for whom the family business, Naomi's Bistro, is named; and now her fiancé, Macdara Flannery. So precious is her engagement that Siobhán wants to keep it just between the two of them for a little longer. But Macdara is her family, which is why when his cousin Jane frantically calls for his help, Siobhán is at his side as the two garda rush from Kilbane to the rural village where Jane and her mother have recently moved. Unfortunately, tragedy awaits them. They find Jane, who is blind, outside the cottage, in a state. Inside, Aunt Ellen lies on her bed in a fancy red dress, no longer breathing. A pillow on the floor and a nearby teacup suggest the mode of death to their trained eyes: the woman has been poisoned and smothered. Someone wanted to make sure she was dead. But who? Devout believers in Irish folklore, the villagers insist the cottage is cursed—built on a fairy path. It turns out Ellen Delaney was not the first to die mysteriously in this cottage. Although the townsfolk blame malevolent fairies, Siobhán and Macdara must follow the path of a murderer all too human—but just as evil...

Starred review from January 27, 2020
O’Connor’s exceptional fifth Irish Village mystery (after 2019’s Murder in an Irish Pub) takes Kildane, County Cork, garda Siobhán O’Sullivan and her fiancé, Det. Sgt. Macdara Flannery, to the remote village of Ballysiogdun. At the cottage of Ellen Delaney, Macdara’s aunt, they’re greeted by Ellen’s grown daughter, Jane, who says she returned home from a weekend in Dublin to find her mother dead. A broken window points to a break-in; other evidence suggests Ellen was poisoned and smothered. Siobhán and Macdara must work to gain the trust of the superstitious locals, who wanted Ellen’s cottage destroyed because it posed a danger being in the middle of a fairy path. O’Connor does a fine job depicting the complex relationship between the spunky Siobhán, who’s troubled by Jane’s failure to provide an alibi for her well-timed weekend away, and the reserved Macdara, who’s reluctant to acknowledge his cousin may have something to hide. Cozy readers will have a hard time putting this one down. Agent: Evan Marshall, Evan Marshall Agency.

- content: Narrator Caroline Lennon transports listeners to Ireland, where traditional beliefs about fairies make for a powerful listening experience. An urgent phone call to Macdara Flannery, a member of the Irish Garda, opens this mystery audiobook. Macdara and his fiance, fellow Garda Siobhn O'Sullivan, become immersed in the murder of Macdara's aunt, which locals blame on evil fairies. Using a distinct Irish accent, which sounds authentic without being overbearing, Lennon immerses listeners in the investigation. Listeners will cringe along with Siobhn as locals ridicule the homeless storyteller with a stutter, whom Lennon depicts sympathetically. Lennon further orients listeners to the Irish view of fairies as malicious creatures despite popular images in America of fairies being sweet and gentle. V.M.G.
