Description
Nothing captures the charm of Edinburgh like the bestselling Isabel Dalhousie series of novels featuring the insatiably curious philosopher and woman detective. Whether investigating a case or a problem of philosophy, the indefatigable Isabel Dalhousie, one of fiction's most richly developed amateur detectives, is always ready to pursue the answers to all of life's questions, large and small. Isabel has been asked to discreetly investigate the candidates for the position of headmaster at a local boys' school. The board has three final candidates but has received an anonymous letter alleging that one of them is not suitable. What she discovers about the candidates is surprising, but what she discovers about herself and about Jamie, the father of her young son, turns out to be equally revealing. Isabel's investigation will have her exploring issues of ambition, as well as of charity, forgiveness, and humility, as she moves nearer and nearer to some of the most hidden precincts of the human heart.

      • content: McCall Smith has created a world where humor is gentle, suffering is acknowledged but not foregrounded, and efforts to do good are usually rewarded. It's a wonderful place to visit, even if we don't get to live there.

While Smith’s seventh novel featuring Scottish philosopher and woman of means Isabel Dalhousie (after The Lost Art of Gratitude) doesn’t break new ground, the author’s many fans will be more than satisfied to follow the small events of Isabel’s life, in particular her struggle to come to terms with her own imperfections. Much to Isabel’s dismay, Prue, a cellist with a terminal illness who’s a professional colleague of her bassoonist fiancé, Jamie, has been making ever greater demands on the good-natured Jamie. An angry Isabel eventually accuses Jamie of sleeping with Prue. Meanwhile, Isabel agrees to dig into the background of three candidates for headmaster at an Edinburgh boys’ school after an anonymous letter claims that one of them has a skeleton in his closet. If chance more than a logical strategy leads Isabel to resolve this issue, her investigation leads her to valuable insights into human nature. As usual, crisp, often funny prose complements the author’s limitless reserve of good will and understanding of people in general.

      • content: This surprisingly thin and windy story featuring the philosopher Isabel Dalhousie is wonderfully well served by the completely charming performance of Davina Porter. Otherwise, the title seems unrelated to the story. Isabel is asked to discover an anonymously reported skeleton in the closet of one of three candidates for a job. One candidate turns out to be her niece's new boyfriend, quite a coincidence even if Scotland is a small country. Another withdraws from the search, and the third may have fudged his academic credentials, but Isabel never gets around to investigating that. I'm not sure what Smith was thinking with this one, apart from giving Porter a chance to prove she could make an ethics textbook delightful. If that was his plan, it's a triumph. B.G. Isabel, moral philosopher and amateur detective, living in McCall Smith’s Edenic Edinburgh, has plenty of time between investigations to ponder the pettiness of her neighbors and engage in self-introspection. The case demanding her expertise requires her to probe into the backgrounds of three candidates for a headmaster’s job at a local boys’ school, instigated by a mysterious anonymous letter. But Isabel’s investigations are secondary to her quotidian preoccupations. The series is charmingly narrated by Davina Porter, who has locked in her portrayals of Isabel, Jamie, and their son, Charlie. As usual, Porter settles on just the right tone for every newcomer. She provides McCall Smith fans with another dead-on performance worth lingering over. A Pantheon hardcover (Reviews, Aug. 16).
