Love arrives when it’s least expected in this cute romp from Foster (The Somerset Girls), which centers on Sunset, Ky., veterinarian Ivey Anders and her close friend and vet tech, Hope Mage. Ivey has recently ended a bad relationship, and while she’s not ready for more commitment, she’s also not opposed to a fling—but she never anticipated attractive single father Corbin Meyer. Corbin has only recently taken in Justin, the 10-year-old son he never knew he had, after Justin’s mother, a high school ex of Corbin’s who struggles with drug addiction, abandoned the boy. So while Corbin may not exactly be fling material, his chemistry with Ivey is undeniable and their genuine connection outweighs Ivey’s reluctance to embark on a new relationship. Meanwhile, Hope develops feelings for Corbin’s brother, Lang, but struggles with traumatic memories of a brutal attack that left her distrustful of men. Lang, however, proves he is more than willing to be careful with her heart. The strong female protagonists and their sweet friendship enhance the romance as both Ivey and Hope learn to embrace new love. In the second installment in Foster's "Summer Friends" series (after The Somerset Girls), Corbin moves with his ten-year-old son Justin to veterinarian Ivey's small town by the lake. Still reeling from learning only recently about the existence of his son, Corbin is looking to set down roots, while Ivey, tired of always playing it safe, is looking for a fun summer fling. Ivey adores Justin's sweet demeanor with all creatures great and small and beings to realize that her feelings for his dad may be a little more serious than she first considered. When Corbin's brother Lang moves in to help out, he begins to romance Ivey's friend Hope, and all soon discover that they may have just found what they have been missing. VERDICT The perfect summer read has memorable characters and heartfelt family drama. Fans of Foster and new readers alike will be pleased with her latest offering.
