Cries of the Lost
(Adobe EPUB eBook, Kindle Book, OverDrive Read)
When market researcher Arthur Cathcart emerged from a coma and set out to track down whoever murdered his wife, the results were far from pre-ordained. Wounded and alone, grief-stricken and hiding off the grid, he thought the only mystery was who killed Florencia, and why? But the quest for justice uncovered a host of fresh mysteries, just beginning with an elaborate fraud and embezzlement scheme, complete with dummy corporations and off-shore numbered accounts. So in place of "who killed Florencia?" he was forced to ask "who was Florencia?" There was nothing about their lives together that answered this or any of a thousand questions she left behind. All he really knew was she came from Chile, had a knack for figures and owned her own insurance agency. So Arthur takes off again to do what he knew he did best: Finding stuff out. What follows is a chase around the world, from the Caribbean to the Mediterranean, and remote parts north and south. No longer alone, with Natsumi Fitzgerald at his side, armed with a portfolio of false identities, hard-learned tradecraft and the continued cloak of anonymity, Cathcart plunges into the world of international terrorism and government intrigue, where the currency is betrayal and the rewards are calculated in blood and revenge.

- content: After his wife, Florencia, is assassinated and he's left for dead (in Dead Anyway, 2012), Arthur Cathcart gets revenge, but he still wants answers. What motivated the assassination, and why was Florencia, owner of a profitable insurance brokerage company, embezzling large sums of money? The bullet that hit Cathcart's brain during the shooting—he was certified as dead by his cardiologist sister—has robbed him of some of his numerical abilities, but he's still a crackerjack researcher skilled with electronics. So, with Natsumi Fitzgerald, the blackjack dealer he fell in love with after his rehab, Cathcart sets out on his quest. With money secure and alternate identities available, the two warily open a safe-deposit box in a Cayman Islands bank, retrieving the flash drive inside but touching off an international chase by various factions that want them dead. In an adrenaline-fueled chase across beautiful European locales, including the south of France and lake district of Italy, Cathcart and Fitzgerald make canny use of their resources to remain a step ahead of their pursuers. With Cathcart as the once-nerdy everyman up against powerful adversaries and Fitzgerald as his loving sidekick, Knopf has a smart, sizzling, jet-setting series with a delightful touch of wry wit.

Knopf’s entertaining if somewhat repetitive follow-up to 2012’s Dead Anyway finds market researcher Arthur Cathcart still searching for clues to the actions of his murdered wife, Florencia Etxarte, and the secrets that died with her. In the first book, Cathcart barely survived the attack that killed Florencia and persuaded his doctor sister to declare him dead so he can operate with anonymity. Aided by girlfriend Natsumi Fitzgerald, Cathcart retrieves the contents of Florencia’s safe deposit box in the Caymans, only to be attacked when they leave the bank. That’s the start of an increasingly complex and dangerous journey that takes the pair across Europe and the U.S., where they continuously alter their disguises and use an endless series of electronic devices. Knopf has fun with the cat-and-mouse games, both cerebral and physical, as Cathcart strives to stay a step ahead of their mysterious pursuers, who are all linked to Florencia’s Basque heritage.
