So Much I Want to Tell You: Letters to My Little Sister
(Adobe EPUB eBook, Kindle Book, OverDrive Read)
In 2007, Anna Akana lost her teen sister, Kristina, to suicide. In the months that followed, she realized that the one thing helping her process her grief and begin to heal was comedy. So she began making YouTube videos as a form of creative expression and as a way to connect with others. Ten years later, Anna has more than a million subscribers who watch her smart, honest vlogs on her YouTube channel. Her most popular videos, including “How to Put On Your Face” and “Why Girls Should Ask Guys Out,” are comical and provocative, but they all share a deeper message: Your worth is determined by you and you alone. You must learn to love yourself.
In So Much I Want to Tell You, Anna opens up about her own struggles with poor self-esteem and reveals both the highs and lows of coming-of-age. She offers fresh, funny, hard-won advice for young women on everything from self-care to money to sex, and she is refreshingly straightforward about the realities of dating, female friendship, and the hustle required to make your dreams come true. This is Anna’s story, but, as she says, it belongs just as much to Kristina and to every other girl who must learn that growing up can be hard to do. Witty and real, Anna breaks things down in a way only a big sister can.

A collection of advice and life lessons for a dearly departed sibling. The author's younger sister, Kristina, committed suicide in 2007. Since then, YouTube comedian Akana has tried to make sense of her death and make her own life mean more by working hard to fulfill her dreams. "Kristina is the driving force behind everything I do. This book isn't just inspired by her, it's for her....This book is filled with the advice I would give her if she was still here," writes the author, "the advice I want to reach out and give to young, lost, teen girls before it's too late." The easily digestible pieces are geared toward younger readers, but some older readers may benefit from the lessons regarding love, career, friendship, and other topics. Akana discusses the turmoil she went through immediately after her sister's death and how she began creating comedy videos, which eventually wound up on YouTube, where she became a huge success. She believed in her ability to create and hasn't stopped, regardless of the racial discrimination (she is Asian) she has encountered while trying to launch an acting career. Broken into four major areas--creativity; identity; money, work, and career; and relationships--much of what this self-made woman discusses is geared toward the entertainment/acting/social media venues with which she is familiar, but there are applications for any entrepreneur launching out into unknown territory. You have to belief in yourself, be the boss, "do what you need to do to get shit done." Akana is honest about her screw-ups at work, her eating disorder, and her poor choices in relationships. Refreshingly, the essays are not snarky, sarcastic, or filled with awkward attempts at humor; they read like conversations with someone who has experienced much and is willing to share her defeats and successes so others may avoid some of the pitfalls. Frank advice on how to live a productive, happy life despite certain odds, written in tribute to a "fearless, talented, and bold" sister.COPYRIGHT(2017) Kirkus Reviews, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.

Through a devastating tragedy arises a comedic and inspiring book. When her 13-year-old sister, Kristina, killed herself, Akana's life seemed to end as well. She fell into a depression that dulled her creativity and drove her to self-medicate with drugs, food, and overspending. It wasn't until she discovered comedy that she became herself again. Now a popular YouTuber with more than 1.8 million subscribers, Akana dedicates this collection of personal essays to Kristina. Covering everything from identity to career to relationships, Akana shares inspiring advice and life lessons so others can learn from her mistakes. Written in Akana's witty, intelligent, and conversational voice, this is the perfect book for young women struggling to find their place in the world while remaining true to themselves as well as for those who have lost someone to suicide. So Much I Want to Tell You is funny, honest, and freeing: The only things that matter are the ones that you decide matter. It's up to you to choose what to do with the time you're given on this earth. (Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2017, American Library Association.)
