A Sharp Solitude: A Novel of Suspense
(Adobe EPUB eBook, Kindle Book, OverDrive Read)
In the darkening days of autumn, in a remote region near the Canadian border, a journalist has been murdered. Anne Marie Johnson was last seen with Reeve Landon, whose chocolate Labrador was part of an article she had been writing about a scientific canine research program. Now Landon is the prime suspect. Intensely private and paranoid, in a panic that he'll be wrongfully arrested, he ventures deep into in the woods. Even as he evades the detective, Landon secretly feels the whole thing is somehow deserved, a karmic punishment for a horrifying crime he committed as a young boy.
While Montana FBI investigator Ali Paige is not officially assigned to the case, Landon—an ex-boyfriend and the father of her child—needs help. Ali has only one objective for snooping around the edges of an investigation she's not authorized to pursue: to save her daughter the shame of having a father in jail and the pain of abandonment she endured as a child. As the clock ticks and the noose tightens around Landon's neck, Ali isn't sure how far she will go to find out the truth. And what if the truth is not something she wants to know?
A Sharp Solitude is a study of two flawed characters, bonded by a child, trying to make their way in an extraordinary place where escape seems possible. But no one can ever really outrun their demons, even in the vast terrain of Glacier, the ultimate backdrop for a journey of the soul.

- A gripping new mystery from the "fresh new voice in the thriller genre" (Steve Berry, New York Times bestselling author) and author of The Wild Inside, set in the magnificent and brutal terrain of Glacier National Park—for fans of C.J. Box and Nevada Barr.

FBI agent Ali Paige shares narrative duties with her former lover and father of her child, researcher Reeve Landon, in Carbo’s enthralling fourth suspense novel set in Montana (after 2017’s The Weight of Night). Ali has worked hard to make a good home for herself and her daughter, Emily, after suffering an abusive childhood in New Jersey. Her comfortable life is threatened when the body of reporter Anne Marie Johnson, who had been interviewing Reeve for a magazine article, is found outside Glacier National Park. Convinced that Reeve, who has a troubled past, is innocent of Anne Marie’s murder, Ali risks everything to investigate the case, even though it’s outside her jurisdiction. When Reeve panics and flees into the wilderness, the forces of nature and law enforcement bear down on them both. A skillful storyteller, Carbo highlights how the crimes of the past can forever haunt both victims and perpetrators. Agent: Nancy Yost, Nancy Yost Literary Agency.

An FBI agent struggles to help the father of her child.Ali Page is an FBI investigator in Montana, far from the New Jersey home where her dysfunctional early life left her with emotional problems. But her pain is nothing compared to that of Reeve Landon. Even after fathering their much-loved child, Emily, Reeve was unable to commit to marriage. Ever since he accidentally shot his best friend when they were 9 years old, guilt has ruined his life. Following a series of teenage run-ins with the law, he finally got a degree and a job in the wilderness near Glacier National Park, where he and McKay, his hyperactive dog, track down animal scat for the University of Montana's research program. When reporter Anne Marie Johnson spends the day with him for an article on his job, he finds her attractive, but he's put off by the questions she asks about gun control and his past. Soon after Anne Marie is found dead outside a cabin she's borrowing from a friend, Reeve is arrested. Nervous and resentful, he doesn't admit that Anne Marie was in his cabin, and even though he's released, it's obvious that the police consider him their main suspect. Ali, knowing that it's a conflict of interest for her to get involved but worried that the police won't look at anyone else, uses her position to get information from police and coroner's reports and questions people she thinks may be involved. Although Anne Marie has written stories on wildlife, her current focus on gun control has led her to interview some dangerous people. While Reeve uses his job as an excuse to escape into the mountains with McKay, Ali digs herself deeper into trouble trying to prove him innocent.Although the beauties of the area remain the same as in The Weight of Night (2017), Carbo introduces a new sleuth, plenty of angst, and a tighter plot that switches back and forth between the thoughts of the heroine and the hero.COPYRIGHT(2018) Kirkus Reviews, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.
