Description

First in a new series from New York Times bestselling author Dale Brown, featuring U.S. Air Force intelligence officer Nick Flynn on the hunt for Russian commandos in the mountains of Alaska.
After a CIA covert mission goes badly awry, U.S. Air Force intelligence officer Nicholas Flynn is exiled to guard a remote radar post along Alaska's Arctic frontier. This dead-end assignment is designed to put his career permanently on ice, but Flynn's not the type to fade quietly into obscurity...

As winter storms pound Alaska and northern Canada, Russian aircraft begin penetrating deep into friendly airspace. Are these rehearsals for a possible first strike, using Russia's new long-range stealth cruise missiles? Or is some other motive driving the Kremlin to take ever-increasing risks along the hostile Arctic frontier separating two of the world's great powers?

When an American F-22 collides with one of the Russian interlopers, things go south fast—in seconds, missiles are fired. There are no survivors. Despite horrific weather, Flynn and his security team are ordered to parachute into the area in a desperate bid to reach the crash sites ahead of the Russians. It's now obvious that the Pentagon and CIA are withholding vital information, but Flynn and his men have no choice but to make the dangerous jump.

Soon they're caught in a deadly game of hide-and-seek with Spetsnaz commandos operating covertly on American soil. It seems that the F-22s and their Russian counterparts aren't the first aircraft to have gone missing in these desolate mountains. The Kremlin is hunting for the first prototype of its new stealth bomber—which vanished on what was supposed to be a test flight...while loaded with nuclear-armed stealth cruise missiles.

As Russia and the U.S. square off on the brink of all-out-war, it's up to Nick to find the missing bomber...and prevent a potential nuclear holocaust.

This first in a new series has U.S. Air Force intelligence officer Nick Flynn tasked with beating the Russians to the crash site after an American F-22 and a Russian aircraft meet head-on above Alaska's mountains--in the midst of a raging blizzard. Brown, whose Patrick McLanahan thrillers have built him a large fan base, launches a new series. Nick Flynn is a disgraced U.S. Air Force intelligence operative, exiled to an assignment in Alaska. But wouldn't you know it: a new Russian stealth bomber on its maiden flight crashes into the Alaskan mountains, and it falls to Flynn to locate the missing aircraft before the Russians can get to it. There may be new characters and a new story here, but otherwise Brown sticks to what's been working: a huge cast (most of whom, except for the leads, are thinly drawn), terminology-heavy prose, nods to real-world tech (the missing plane is a PAK-DA, a real Russian plane currently in development), and a writing style that gets right to the point without any stylistic flair. The author's fans will give this one an enthusiastic thumbs-up, but readers who've never found Brown to be their cup of tea won't change their minds.

After 30 previous techno-thrillers starring Patrick McLanahan or his son Bradley, here Brown begins a new series featuring Nick Flynn, an air force captain who is banished to a remote Alaskan outpost after being blamed for a rescue mission fiasco in Libya. As he tries to meld his band of misfits into a working unit at the Alaska outpost, he is unaware of the international forces converging on their remote setting, in the middle of a raging blizzard. A Russian pilot, backed by a wealthy oligarch, has flown a top-secret, nuclear-armed stealth bomber prototype into the Alaskan wilderness and is demanding billions in ransom from Russia and the United States. Both nations are desperate to find the plane, but the weather conditions mean that only Flynn's ragtag band is available to fight an elite Spetsnaz commando force. Flynn and his crew must parachute at night in a winter storm and race to find the plane in order to prevent a nuclear war. VERDICT Filled with detailed descriptions of weapons and aircraft, as well as Brown's trademark action and suspense, this series starter should take off like its numerous predecessors.--Roland Person, formerly with Southern Illinois Univ. Lib., Carbondale
