Description

Hannah Morrissey's Hello, Transcriber is a captivating mystery suspense debut featuring a female police transcriber who goes beyond the limits to solve a harrowing case.
Every night, while the street lamps shed the only light on Wisconsin's most crime-ridden city, police transcriber Hazel Greenlee listens as detectives divulge Black Harbor's gruesome secrets. An aspiring novelist, Hazel believes that writing a book could be her only ticket out of this frozen hellscape, but her life isn't exactly brimming with inspiration. Until her neighbor confesses to hiding the corpse of an overdose victim.
With an insider's look at the investigation, Hazel becomes spellbound by the lead detective, Nikolai Kole, and the chilling narrative he shares with her. Through his transcription, she learns that the suspicious death is linked to Candy Man—a drug dealer notorious for selling illegal substances to children—and when Kole invites her on a covert operation to help take the dealer down, the promise of a story calls to her. As the investigation unfolds, Hazel will discover just how far she will go for her story, even if it means destroying her marriage, her career, and any chance she has of getting out of Black Harbor alive. Because if she's learned one relentless truth about this place, it's the fact that everybody lies.
"Narrator Angela Dawe assumes a millennial's exasperated tone, endearing listeners to Hazel Greenlee, a wannabe novelist." AudioFile

Aspiring novelist Hazel Greenlee, the narrator of Morrissey’s solid debut, takes a transcription job with the Black Harbor, Wis., police department, hoping to minimize time spent with her domineering husband and inspire her fiction. Hazel knows the impoverished city has a high crime rate but is still shocked when her neighbor’s 26-year-old son, Sam Samson, appears at the precinct and confesses to hiding a body. In typing reports for the investigator on the case, Nik Kole, Hazel learns that Sam allegedly helped drug dealer Tyler Krejarek carry a nine-year-old boy to a dumpster after the child overdosed on Oxycodone in Tyler’s apartment. Tyler then fled. Intrigued, Hazel chats up Nik, who enlists her assistance in an unsanctioned search. Attraction sparks, triggering decisions that endanger Hazel’s marriage, employment, and safety. Despite an overwritten opening and some shaggy plotting, this mystery largely succeeds thanks to its strong sense of place and realistically flawed heroine. Hazel’s thorny relationships provide regular infusions of tension that catapult the tale to a dramatic close. Morrissey is off to a promising start. Agent: Sharon Pelletier, Dystel, Goderich & Bourret.

      • content: Narrator Angela Dawe assumes a millennial's exasperated tone, endearing listeners to Hazel Greenlee, a wannabe novelist. Working the graveyard shift in a small Wisconsin town, the depressed, troubled Hazel is shackled to a computer in a grim police station, where she transcribes recorded police reports. Hazel's curiosity about a case involving a dead child thrusts her into a seamy murder. This riveting debut features colorful characters, including despicable crooks and lovable heroes. Dawe moves the narrative seamlessly between Hazel's amateur detective life and her troubled home life. Dawe's intelligent-sounding delivery of Hazel's ambitious vocabulary and sometimes flowery observations continually reminds listeners of the character's literary ambitions. R.O.
