Description
Travel into the dark underworld of Glasgow, Scotland, in the suspenseful, award-winning organized-crime thriller series that the New York Times calls "habit-forming."
Hit man Calum MacLean has finally had enough of killing. And he's planning an unprecedented escape just as his employers need him the most — Glasgow's biggest criminal organizations are gearing up for a final, fatal confrontation.
The panic over Calum's abrupt disappearance may finally give Detective Michael Fisher the chance he needs to close the case of a lifetime. But first, he must track down a man who has become a master at staying in the shadows.
Don't pick up a Mackay book unless you've got spare time. They're habit-forming." — Janet Maslin, The New York Times "It's been a long time since so many pages went by so fast . . . Mackay is a natural storyteller [with] a voice to which we're happy to surrender. Surprisingly rewarding . . . a thriller trilogy that thrills. " — Dennis Drabelle, The Washington Post "Bracing . . . remarkable." — Adam Woog, Seattle Times

Starred review from April 20, 2015
Alliances crumble and blood spills as Mackay's Glasgow trilogy reaches its bloody operatic finale, with gunman Calum MacLean leading the charge. After taking over the spot as crime boss Peter Jamieson's top killer in How a Gunman Says Goodbye, Calum is the go-to man for any job Jamieson needs doing. This includes a hit on one of his own men (who's been snitching to the cops) and Richard Hardy, the accountant who cooks the books for Jamieson's rival, Shug Francis. What Jamieson doesn't know, however, is that this is the last job Calum intends to do as a gunman; he wants out of the life. But "retiring" from a career of killing people for a living isn't the same as leaving any other job—Calum plans to disappear and never come back. With the help of his brother, William, Calum tries to make a clean break, but nothing goes according to plan. Plans, double-crosses, and deceptions that were put in place during the events of The Necessary Death of Lewis Winter come back into play as Mackay gathers all the pieces of his massively inventive puzzle together. No one comes out unscathed, neither the criminals nor the cops—though these are so often interchangeable that labels seem unnecessary in the end as everyone simply fights to survive. Agent: Grainne Fox, Fletcher & Company.

Mackay's "Glasgow Trilogy" has received mostly raves since its first volume, The Necessary Death of Lewis Winter, appeared in the UK in 2013; that book was short-listed for the Crime Writers' Association (CWA) John Creasey New Blood Dagger Award and long-listed for the CWA Steel Dagger Book of the Year Award. The trilogy focuses on turf wars among the various criminal organizations swarming Glasgow's underworld.
