Description
Police Chief Josie Gray is living every cop's worst nightmare: a murder suspect who she knows personally. Even worse, it's her longtime boyfriend, Dillon Reese. Dillon's secretary has been murdered, and now Dillon's disappeared. Josie has no choice but to relinquish the investigation, giving up control of a case that matters more than any other. As suspicions split the department, Josie struggles with her choices on the night she last saw Dillon. If she had acted on her instincts, would the innocent woman still be alive? Unable to stay on the sidelines, Josie investigates on her own terms - and uncovers a plot that could bring the killer millions. Now she must make a choice between her oath as an officer and her personal desire to get revenge.

      • content: In her third outing, Texas Chief of Police Josie Gray takes on her most personal case yet. Narrator Nicole Poole is completely convincing as Josie is dragged through an emotional wringer. Thanks to Poole's performance, Josie's frustration and helplessness sound authentic when her longtime lover and friend, Dillon Reece, fails to show up for a date. She doesn't check on him because she's insecure about their relationship, and when she learns he's been kidnapped, Poole subtly reflects her sense of remorse. With a brutal Mexican drug cartel possibly at the heart of things, things couldn't get much more exciting. S.J.H. © AudioFile 2014, Portland, Maine

        January 13, 2014
Josie Gray faces her most personally and professionally challenging case yet in Fields’s engaging, if overly complex, third mystery featuring the Artemis, Tex., police chief (after 2013’s Scratchgravel Road). When Josie’s boyfriend, accountant Dillon Reese, goes missing and becomes a suspect in the shooting murder of his secretary, Christina Handley, Josie cedes the lead investigator role to another officer. An absurdly high ransom demand ($9 million) and a frightening video of a captive Dillon clarify the situation, though the motivation of the kidnappers remains a mystery, as does Christina’s seemingly senseless killing. Despairing of ever raising such a ransom, Josie turns for help to her hostage negotiator friend, Nick Santos. The narrative alternates between border tensions; the unpredictable actions of Dillon’s clients, like junk car dealer Wally Follet and ruthless millionaire Julian Beckwith; and Dillon’s increasingly desperate captivity. The action builds to a satisfying climax, as Josie races to locate and rescue her lover. Agent: Dominick Abel, Dominick Abel Literary Agency.
