Description
Bestselling and beloved characters Toot and Puddle return twenty-five years after their debut with a brand-new story full of the same charm and whimsy that originally made they so popular.
Toot & Puddle, with help from cousin Opal, are planting the dream garden they've always wanted. But when the plants arrive, so does trouble. Someone or something keeps eating all of the spinach! Not wanting to share with the thief, they try everything from putting up signs to fencing the garden in, all to keep out the unwanted visitor. When the trio finally does find out who's eating all the vegetables, they decide that maybe sharing is the best way to go after all.
Holly Hobbie renders these beloved characters in exquisite watercolor, and has us rooting for them to the end.

        September 1, 1997
In this charming, sweetly illustrated debut picture book, home was "such a perfect place to be that Puddle never wanted to go anywhere else. Toot, on the other hand, loved to take trips." So in January when Toot goes on his "biggest trip ever," Puddle happily stays home to enjoy the snow and go ice-skating. What follows is a kind of piggy calendar as Toot's monthly postcards are juxtaposed with illustrations of Puddle's homespun activities. Toot writes, "Egypt is awesome. The pyramids are the greatest. Wish you could meet me at the oasis," and Puddle back home wishes "Toot were there to taste the pancakes." When Toot returns home in December, Puddle salutes Toot's "adventures around the world," and Toot drinks to Puddle's "adventures right at home." Although the story at times seems to oscillate between a traditional story narrative (e.g., "Yes, Puddle missed his friend") to a text that occasionally resembles picture labels (e.g.,"Meanwhile... presenting Puddle at Pocket Pond!"), the parallel stories highlight seasonal activities familiar to children (and tourist spots familiar to adults). Hobbie's detailed watercolors are reminiscent of Helen Oxenbury or Lynn Munsinger, crammed with clever and humorous details (e.g., a mountain ram crowding out a Mont Blanc-climbing Toot). Children will be reassured by the message that friends can have different interests and still enjoy one another. Ages 4-8.

Beloved characters Toot, Puddle, and Opal are back in this garden mystery. Toot, Puddle, and Puddle's young cousin Opal are planting a garden full of vegetables and flowers. Each morning they check to see how their garden is growing. Every evening they admire their garden, dreaming of eating their crops. But when they visit the garden one morning, they notice that their lettuce leaves have been snacked on. Realizing there is an uninvited guest, the pigs build a fence around the garden. Unfortunately, that doesn't stop whatever it is from coming back to munch their lettuce and spinach. Riddled with worries and beset by nightmares about the creature, the three pigs decide to stay up all night and catch the culprit. Toot, Puddle, and Opal do everything they can to scare the creature away, but it pays them no mind, leaving at dawn. When it doesn't come back, they begin to realize that maybe there was enough spinach for everyone. What begins as a story about suspicion and withholding ends as a sweet tale of kindness and sharing. Hobbie's classic watercolor illustrations create a sweet, whimsical springtime garden. The pigs show great emotion on their faces and with their ears, bringing the text to life. (This book was reviewed digitally with 10-by-20-inch double-page spreads viewed at 27.6% of actual size.) An adorable springtime addition to this beloved series, with an oh-so-timely message. With its eye-catching and charming cover, this low-key tale of Puddle's diminutive cousin Opal will likely please fans of the titular duo's previous books. When Opal visits Toot and Puddle in Woodcock Pocket, she wants her wobbly tooth to "come out all by itself." While the affable threesome pick strawberries, play on the swing and go swimming, no one notices when the tooth is lost. In a series of spot illustrations, brave Toot finds the pearly white at the bottom of the pond so Opal can put it under her pillow. Fearing that the Tooth Fairy won't come to Woodcock Pocket, Puddle dresses the part so Opal won't be disappointed. But all three get a surprise at sunup. Hobbie's winsome and endearing pigs continue to please with their easygoing solutions to everyday problems. But more appealing than the simple plot are Hobbie's gentle watercolors, particularly Puddle in his Tooth Fairy costume, Toot in his flippers and diving mask, and Opal holding her nose as she plunges into Pocket Pond. The artwork exudes the sweet nostalgia and timeless quality that make Hobbie's oeuvre so appealing. Ages 4-8.

The popular porcine pals make their swan song in this charmer of a holiday volume, which marks the end of Hobbie's series. With Christmas fast approaching and no snow in sight, Toot and Puddle are more jumpy than jolly, each trying to find the perfect present for the other as they wish for white weather. Their caring, odd-couple rapport, similar to that of other favorite fictional friends Frog and Toad or George and Martha, has a comfortable and inviting sweetness; readers of any age can relate to the duo's universal feelings and experiences. Subtle facial expressions and childlike poses (and outfits) render the diminutive, piglet pair instantly endearing. But best friends always have the best ideas, and the piggy pair has its best celebration ever. Young cousin Opal adds a pip of funny pep to the generally cozy proceedings, making this another merry and bright visit to Woodcock Pocket. Ages 3-6.

Come canceled flights or high snowdrifts, piglet pals Toot & Puddle will
be together for Christmas in Hobbie's latest series charmer. Globe-trotting Toot, who has been in Scotland for a family reunion (and who has a tam and tartan kilt to show for it), promises homebody Puddle that he'll make it back to Woodcock Pocket for Christmas. But severe winter weather nearly derails that plan. Luckily, a magical heirloom and a certain red-suited sleigh driver help Toot along. Hobbie's chipper text and alternately cozy and funny watercolors are as winning as ever. Ages 4-8.
