Description

In this gutsy debut novel, flawed but unsinkable Claudia Silver cuts a wide comic swath through 1990s New York City in her misguided attempts to find love and happiness.

Estranged from her bohemian Brooklyn family and fired for an impropriety at work, Claudia Silver is officially in over her head. When her younger sister lands on her doorstep urgently in need of help, twenty-something Claudia desperately wants to offer the rescue that she herself has longed for. But Claudia missteps dramatically, straight into a disastrous love affair that disrupts three very different New York households. Ultimately, she discovers the resilient nature of love where she least expects it—among her own family.

Claudia Silver to the Rescue is the firece yet tender chronicle of the many humiliations and occasional triumphs of a young woman determined to wrest her identity from the spectacular wreckage of her mistake. Uncomfortably hilarious, quintessentially human, Claudia is an unforgettable heroine who shoots for the stars and hits the ceiling.

        March 11, 2013
In her fiction debut, screenwriter and NBC Universal Creative Director Ebel returns to the early ’90s to tell the story of 24-year-old Claudia Silver, who is trying valiantly to learn how to live after growing up in a dysfunctional family from which she is now estranged. Claudia is fired from her production assistant job and then her 16-year-old sister Phoebe, last seen two years ago, appears on Claudia’s Brooklyn doorstep, desperate to escape their crazy mother and her abusive deadbeat boyfriend. How can Claudia refuse? But as well-meaning as she is, Claudia’s hunger for love and lack of a normal vantage point for healthy relationships vastly complicate matters, and she winds up in an ill-advised affair, which ends a longtime friendship and breaks up several households. So who, in the final analysis, will rescue whom? The author delivers a satisfying and unexpected answer to that question. Readers will root for this deeply flawed but ultimately appealing heroine. Agent: Betsy Lerner, Donow, Carlson & Lerner.

Some families tangle and unravel, while others knit together, hiding every flaw. Claudia Silver, unfortunately, has grown up in the unraveling kind. Sometimes you really can't go home again. At least Claudia can't. With graduation days away, her mother, Edith, blithely announces that there is simply no room for her, now that Edith's skanky boyfriend, Robbie, has moved in, of course. Being cast adrift is nothing new for Claudia. Once again, Claudia lands on her feet, as her best friend, Bronwyn, enlists the help of her father, Paul. Soon the two are roommates in Brooklyn. Subsidized with a monthly allowance from her parents, Bronwyn lives a fairly comfortable, slightly bohemian life working as an assistant talent booker. Claudia is scraping by. Her job as a production assistant and lunch-order architect for a small production company has two perks: free lunches and the beyond sexy (tattooed, pierced, leather-clad) doorman, Ruben Hyacinth. Entangling with Ruben leads to Claudia being unceremoniously fired--the same day that half sister Phoebe shows up, running from Robbie's menacing advances. Determined to help Phoebe, Claudia turns to Paul for advice, but this time, Claudia doesn't land on her feet. She lands in an affair with Paul, which could cost her everything. Ebel exploits her experience as a screenwriter and poet in this lively debut novel. Claudia's dry wit and discerning eye turn what could be a rather mopey coming-of-age tale into a hilarious roller coaster of a ride. Quirks and vexations for each supporting character enrich every scene. Claudia sees quite clearly the price of her own actions, and her goal is survival. Well, with a little fun along the way. Family may be unstable and downright unbalanced, but in this witty, assured, surprising novel, family still has to accept you--mistakes and all.

Claudia Silver may receive top billing in Ebel's crackling debut, but she is surrounded by a cast of terrific supporting players, all of whom could carry a book of their own. The novel's main thread follows the misadventures of Ebel's twentysomething hero, whose default setting is a sort of glib meta-awareness. The recent college grad is tap-dancing as fast as she can to avoid the emptiness of her life, making one ill-advised decision after another, which eventually leads to an affair with her best friend's father, Paul. The ripple effect of Claudia's actions allows Ebel to detour into side plots involving Paul's wife, Annie, and Claudia's younger sister, Phoebe, who's counting on Claudia to rescue her from their mother's creepy boyfriend. It's here that Ebel's writing really shines. She's at her best when she slows down and allows her characters room to breathe, particularly in scenes featuring Claudia's mother, Edith. Claudia may be the shiny penny that draws readers to this book, but it's the grown-ups who give the work its surprising emotional heft.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2013, American Library Association.)

Starred review from April 15, 2013

Unlike her roommate, Bronwyn, Claudia Silver is not beautiful, thin, or receiving an allowance from a wealthy father. Nor does she have prospects for an intellectually stimulating job in a creative field. Unlike the usual chick-lit heroine, however, Claudia doesn't waste time bemoaning the hard facts of her life. Despite setbacks and missteps, she quixotically sets out to rescue her 16-year-old half sister, Phoebe, from their emotionally distant Brooklyn bohemian mother and the woman's abusive live-in boyfriend. Readers stay transfixed as self-deluded but well-intentioned Claudia, confident and careless, lurches from one train wreck in her life to the next, focusing on dreamy future scenarios as Phoebe calmly sets about saving herself. Comic sparks fly and fast-paced dialog sparkles in this first novel from a Los Angeles author with television screenwriting experience (Cold Case; Law and Order). VERDICT This hilariously cringe-worthy tale of woe about a jobless young woman surviving by her wits in New York City is smart and savvy chick lit with plenty of snark.
