Description
When a buttoned-up professor and her unbuttoned daughter fall for the same irresistible man, a delightful, subversive comedy begins. . . .

Life isn’t easy for single mother Ally Hughes. Teaching at Brown, her class load is huge and her boss is a menace. At home, she contends with a critical mother, a falling-down house, and a daughter who never misses a beat. Between taking care of the people she loves, teaching full time, and making ends meet, Ally doesn't have time for a man. She doesn’t date. She’s not into flings. But then she meets Jake, an eager student, young in years but old in soul, who challenges his favorite professor to open up her life, and her heart, to love. It doesn't work. In fact, his urging backfires.
Ten years later, Ally's still single. Jake reappears and surprises her in a brand-new role: He's dating Ally's now-grown daughter. In this hilarious, heartrending tale, Ally is finally forced to concede (not only to herself) that an independent, "liberated" woman can still make room in her life for love.

Moulin’s debut novel is a fun, lighthearted, and sexy romp guaranteed to please. Ally is a professor at Brown and a single mother who had her daughter, Lizzie, while in college. Ever since, Ally has obeyed all the rules, except once. One weekend, when her daughter is visiting her grandmother, Ally has a fling with Jake—a student in her class, 10 years her junior. At the end of the weekend she sends him away, urging him to live his life and not to tie himself down so quickly. Ten years later, Jake reappears, only now he is a superstar actor, and dating Ally’s adult daughter. Jake has never forgotten Ally, and she has certainly never forgotten him; she can’t believe he still has feelings for her after all this time. While Lizzie struggles to figure out a potential career, Ally realizes that there is never a good time to let love into her own life and must make a decision she never expected to have to make. Moulin’s writing background is in television, and it comes across immediately in the snappy dialogue, the sweetly comical conflicts, and the keen sense of mother-daughter dynamics. Though readers might find Ally and Jake’s romance unrealistic, it’s overcome by the exciting escapist nature of the story. Lizzie is the quintessential self-absorbed millennial, who redeems herself in the end, much to the reader’s delight. Moulin fast-paced, feel-good romp is a winner.

A college professor finds herself face to face with a former student with whom she once had a brief affair in television-writer Moulin's first novel. Ally Hughes was a 31-year-old single mother teaching gender politics at Brown when she allowed herself to be seduced by Jake Bean, a sexy, earnest 21-year-old student. Ally's devotion to her 10-year-old daughter, Lizzie, and to her career didn't allow for anything more than a steamy weekend filled with sex and candid conversations, and when Jake told her he wanted more, Ally pushed him away. Cut to 10 years later: Jake is now a famous movie star, and Lizzie, an aspiring actress, is enamored of him. But Jake, hoping to have another shot with Ally, has kept their relationship platonic. When Lizzie brings Jake home to meet Ally, the chemistry that still exists between Ally and Jake is undeniable, and Ally must decide if she is willing to give their relationship a real shot. Funny, romantic, and sexy, Moulin's debut has all the makings of a great leisure read.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2015, American Library Association.)

        July 1, 2015

TV writer Moulin's (Party of Five; The West Wing) charming debut novel is an all-around win. Ally Hughes is a single, working mother teaching at Brown with no time, and no set agenda, to acquire a man in her life. She is too focused on the day, the deadlines, and the demands of others to think about her needs and wants. For a brief weekend though, her normal world is put on pause as she lets Jake, who's just finished taking her class, take over her mind and body with his charm and good looks. As reality sets in for Ally, she believes things just won't, or can't, work out, so she and Jake go their separate ways, much to Jake's disapproval and disappointment. Flash-forward ten years and Ally's daughter Lizzie brings home a guy she likes--a movie star named Noah, formerly known as Jake from that memorable weekend. VERDICT Moulin excellently balances different time lines as well as the story lines of other characters with ease and fluidity. The author has perfected the contemporary romance genre. Moulin has already demonstrated her chops as a writer on Party of Five and The West Wing, both Emmy Award winners, so we can expect something from this first novel about single-mom Ally Hughes, who teaches at Brown while contending with a demanding mother and daughter. A student named Jake encourages Ally's wild side, but it doesn't work out. Then, ten years later, Jake shows up again--as the boyfriend of Ally's daughter.
