Description

The second book in the acclaimed Viv and Charlie mystery series, Homicide for the Holidays is a riveting holiday mystery set amidst the glitz of Chicago's radio drama scene and the grime of its taverns and speakeasies.

A hidden key that opens a drawer locked for the past eight years, a mysterious envelope filled with cash, and a threatening note... none of this is what rising radio star Vivian Witchell expects to find in her late father's office. But when Vivian stumbles into trouble, she hardly knows how to steer herself back to safety.

With the handsome and maddeningly practical private detective Charlie Haverman at her side, Vivian spends the holiday season uncovering the details of the last weeks of her father's life, following a sinister trail of clues that leads her directly to one of the most notorious mob bosses of all time, Al Capone.

Set in Chicago in 1938, Honigford’s entertaining sequel to 2016’s The Darkness Knows finds Vivian Witchell busying herself with a blossoming radio career and a publicity-driven faux romance with her dashing costar. During a Christmas party at her mother’s home, Viv discovers a hidden key, which unlocks the top drawer of her late father’s desk, where she finds an ominous note and thousands of dollars in cash. The mystery provides her with an excuse to contact attractive Charlie Haverman, a private detective she met in her first outing, who reluctantly agrees to investigate. Charlie uncovers secrets that challenge everything Viv thought she knew about her upstanding lawyer father. The lingering legacy of speakeasies and racetracks during Al Capone’s heyday sets the stage for this delightful caper, in which upper-crust Viv and her radio colleagues are unaffected by the hardships of the Great Depression. A few continuity errors mar the plot, but readers seeking a light mystery with period flair will be satisfied. Agent: Elizabeth Trupin-Pulli, JET Literary Associates.

In 1938 Chicago, Viv is busily navigating her newfound fame as a radio star and getting ready for the winter holidays. While decorating the Christmas tree, she discovers a hidden key to a drawer in her father's desk and is shocked to find an envelope full of cash along with a threatening note. Hoping to uncover some answers, Viv hires private detective Charlie and does some investigating of her own. It's not long before Viv begins to regret nosing around as the evidence points to her father's involvement with gangster Al Capone, making her wonder if her father really died of a heart attack. VERDICT With its cast of colorful characters, this captivating second entry in this historical series (after The Darkness Knows) will please aficionados of the period and readers who enjoy Jill Churchill's Depression-era "Grace & Favor" mysteries.
