Description
For fans of Craig Johnson and James Lee Burke—False Positive follows up the powerful punch of Andrew Grant’s novel RUN with a staggering second dose of thrills and suspense that is just as smart, atmospheric, and soul-searing.

Alabama detective Cooper Devereaux makes no apologies for his luxe lifestyle or the way he does his job. Most cops haven’t lived the kind of life he has—starting out as an orphan, raised by a grizzled cop savior—and most don’t use his kind of high-risk tactics. But he may have met his match in fellow detective Jan Loflin, who’s fresh off a long undercover stint in Vice when they’re partnered on a case that will test them both beyond their direst nightmares.

A seven-year-old boy has disappeared from his home in the Birmingham suburbs. But the more Devereaux digs into the missing child’s background, the more he discovers about his own, eventually shaking loose a series of harrowing truths—about bloodlines, mass murder, obsession, and what two damaged detectives have in common with the innocent victim they’re so desperate to save. This twisty page-turner—the debut of the Detective Cooper Devereaux series—hurtles at a mile a minute through an action-packed search for a missing child, culminating in an ending that no reader will see coming.

      • content: Cooper Devereaux, a bit of a rogue cop in Alabama, has a lot of personal baggage. When he begins investigating the case of a missing child, the hunt pulls him to several surprising areas, including some in his own past. Narrator Jon Lindstrom gives Devereaux a deep, steady voice--the voice of a character who remains calm under pressure. Lindstrom also does a decent job providing twanging Southern accents for several women, including Devereaux's partner. The minor characters are less memorable, but the key players have consistent vocal identities. M.B. © AudioFile 2016, Portland, Maine

        November 2, 2015
Grant (Run) starts strong in the first of a new series featuring volatile Birmingham, Ala., police detective Cooper Devereaux, who seems to spend as much time suspended from the force as he does on the job. Cooper and his new partner, detective Jan Loflin, investigate the kidnapping of seven-year-old foster child Ethan Crane. Cooper and Jan are oddly suited to work together—she’s emotionally damaged from her long stint of deep undercover for the vice squad, and he had a disturbing childhood and became a teenage criminal before going straight. Their pasts aren’t window dressing but play an important part in the story. Cooper uncovers a link between Ethan’s disappearance and those of other foster children through the years. Scenes smoothly alternate between the investigation and the female kidnapper, who watches Cooper as intently as she does her next target. The plot stalls midway, but revs up toward the denouement, with a sly twist at the end. Agent: Janet Reid, FinePrint Literary Management.
