Skating on the Edge: Rebecca Robbins Mysteries Series, Book 3
(Adobe EPUB eBook, Kindle Book, OverDrive Read)
Rebecca Robbins, owner of the Toe Stop roller-skating rink, is back, this time joined by a tough and sassy roller derby team, and she has a new puzzling murder to solve.
It's Native American Summer Days in Indian Falls, and Rebecca is roped into taking a turn in the Senior Center dunk tank. That is, until her rhinestone-studded grandfather, Pop, needs help setting up his Elvis act. Minutes from climbing into the tank, Rebecca has to find a replacement, and roller derby girl Sherlene-n-Mean is delighted to fit the bill—-until she's dunked, electrocuted, and killed. It's obvious that this was no accident. Someone rigged the tank, but who was the intended target? Sherlene-n-Mean or Rebecca?
With a list of suspects in hand and Pop cheering her on, Rebecca starts asking questions. Who disliked Sherlene-n-Mean enough to kill her? Could a father really be capable of murdering his own daughter for money? Why has the bowling alley owner suddenly decided to call a truce and offer Rebecca his assistance? Who was Sherlene-n-Mean? Did her mysterious past catch up with her and get her killed or was she a victim of circumstance? Aided by a trio of self-appointed bodyguard derby girls and caught between Deputy Sean and her sometimes-boyfriend Lionel, Rebecca digs for answers, dodges bullets, and races to find a killer before the killer strikes again.
Joelle Charbonneau's third novel is a gem in a charming and hilarious series.

At the start of Charbonneau's fun third mystery featuring roller rink owner Rebecca Robbins (after 2011's Skating over the Line), Rebecca is slated to serve in the dunk tank at the Native American Days event in Indian Falls, Ill., but cancels at the last minute because her eccentric grandfather needs her help with his Elvis impersonation. Instead, roller derby queen Sherlene Patsy gets into the tank, where she's electrocuted. When a heavy disco ball nearly lands on Rebecca's head, someone tampers with her skates, and shots are fired at her, the roller girls of team EstroGenocide set out to thwart the murder plot that Rebecca fears may involve her unreliable father. The solution to the mystery may displease readers who believe in fair play, but the genuine warmth between the characters, the fierce loyalty of the roller derby team, and the distinct thawing of Rebecca's lawman nemesis, Sean Holmes, compensate. A skating rink owner is involved in yet another murder. After her mother died, Rebecca Robbins returned to her hometown hoping for a quick sale of her mother's beloved roller rink. But fate has conspired to keep her in Indian Falls solving mysteries (Skating Over the Line, 2011, etc.), rescuing her Elvis-impersonator grandfather from scrapes and romancing the local veterinarian. Now, Rebecca volunteers to take a turn in the dunk tank at the town's Native American Summer Days but has to pull out at the last minute to help grandpa with his band, a job usually done by her con-artist father, who's back in town after deserting his family years before. Sherlene-n-Mean, one of the roller derby girls who uses her rink, takes her place. When she's electrocuted on her first dunk, Rebecca naturally wonders whom the booby trap was meant for. Her misgivings mount after the rink's disco ball falls and narrowly misses her. Rebecca may not be the most popular woman in town, but she can't believe anyone actually wants her dead--not even her father, who stands to inherit the rink. Maybe Sherlene, who is actually ex-nun Shirley Cline, was the real target. At least Rebecca is gratified to find that, although the roller derby team has only recently moved in from another town, its members like Rebecca enough to volunteer as her bodyguards while she uses her skills to find a killer who may or may not be after her. Rebecca's amusing third continues to flesh out its continuing characters while providing an eccentric bunch of murder suspects.COPYRIGHT(2012) Kirkus Reviews, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.
