Description
Hermit Crab lives in a little shell house on the ocean floor. Wherever he crawls, he carries the shell on his back. He feels safe and snug in his cozy house. But in January, the shell begins to feel tight. Hermit Crab steps out of his safe house into the open sea. Without his shell, the ocean floor seems frightening. Large, hungry fish swim all around. When Hermit Crab finds a bigger, empty shell, he wiggles into it. It feels just right. But it's so plain. Will he ever feel at home in his new house? Popular children's author and illustrator Eric Carle captivates young readers with this delightful tale of a young crab growing up. With the available print and audio book combination, youngsters will enjoy seeing the beauty of Hermit Crab as he changes and the amazing ocean world around him. Narrator John McDonough provides the perfect voice for the young crab as he increases both in size and self-confidence.

Just right for a board book, Eric Carle's A House for Hermit Crab takes his tale of a crustacean in search of a new shell home to youngest readers. PW wrote, "Carle's underwater neighborhood is snug, dynamic and full of possibilities." .

      • content: Will Damron is an earnest and quiet narrator--which is just right for Hermit Crab as he sets out along the seafloor in a quest for a newer and larger shell and decorations for his new house. Month by month, Hermit Crab encounters wondrous creatures whom he graciously invites to adorn his new shell. Damron never fails to capture Hermit Crab's admiration for the hard work or sturdiness or appearance of each new animal. Young listeners will delight in imagining the look of Hermit Crab's house at year's end and in Hermit Crab's solution for what to do with his now too small shell. The production includes a foreword that introduces hermit crabs and an afterword that details the various sea beings that Hermit Crab encounters. Gentle background music accompanies the narration. Hermit Crab moves out of his small shell on the sea floor, in search of a new residence. When he finds a bigger place, a sea anemone offers to move in with him; a starfish agrees to decorate the joint. A snail and a sea urchin are employed for cleaning and protection, a lantern fish for lighting and smooth pebbles are used for a wall. Hermit lives happily for a while, until it is time to move again, to a still larger place. Carle's underwater neighborhood is snug, dynamic and full of possibilities. Droplets of color enrich the sea bottom and blades of seaweed are superimposed on the bright white background, in pictures that are occasionally quite abstract, but always engaging. All ages.
