Description

In a “thriller with a sharp take on wealth and privilege” (People, Book of the Week), two best friends grift their way through the California elite—until one scam goes awry.

“A propulsive, sun-drenched adventure with smart, sharp commentary on wealth and power.”—Grace D. Li, New York Times bestselling author of Portrait of a Thief

A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR: PopSugar, Harper’s Bazaar, CrimeReads
Summer and Leo would do anything for each other. Inspired by the way each has had to carve her place in a hostile and unforgiving world, and united by the call of the open road, they travel around sunny California in Summer’s tricked-out Land Cruiser. It’s not a glamorous life, but it gives them the freedom they crave from the painful pasts they’ve left behind. But even free spirits have bills to pay. Luckily, Summer is a skilled pickpocket, a small-time thief, and a con artist—and Leo, determined to pay her own way, has learned a trick or two.
Eager for a big score, Leo catches in her crosshairs Michael Forrester, a self-made billionaire and philanthropist. When her charm wins him over, Leo is rewarded with an invitation to his private island off the California coastline for a night of fabulous excess. She eagerly anticipates returning with photos that can be sold to the paparazzi, jewelry that can be liquidated, and endless stories to share with Summer.
Instead, Leo disappears.
On her own for the first time in years, Summer decides to infiltrate Michael’s island and find out what really happened. But when she arrives, no one has seen Leo—she’s not on the island as far as they know. Plus, there was only one way on the island—and no way off—for the coming days. Trapped in a scheme she helped initiate, could Summer have met her match?

Heard (The Kill Club) smartly engages with questions of gender, privilege, and accountability in this rousing thriller. Pickpocket Summer, deserted by her mother as a teen, picked up fellow grifter Leo one day while both were panhandling. In the five years since, they’ve traveled around California running scams on rich marks. Leo hopes to convert the billionaire philanthropist Michael Forrester’s interest in her Instagram account into a cash cow, but when Leo fails to contact Summer after her and Michael’s date, Summer cozies up to one of Michael’s confidants so she can gain access to his private research island and search for her missing friend, turning up potentially deadly secrets in the process. Heard follows the women separately, on slightly different timelines, peppering in flashbacks to their early lives without breaking the real-time tension of the main plot, and ably balances an anxious sense the women are in over their heads with satisfying moments highlighting their resourcefulness, all integrated into a story that packs more surprises than the setup initially promises. Readers will want to ride with Summer and Leo all the way to the end. Agent: Lauren Spieller, Triada US Literary.

Starred review from June 10, 2024

An overnight dream date with a self-made billionaire turns into a nightmare in Heard's (The Kill Club; Dead End Girls) feminist thriller, capably narrated in alternating chapters by Kelsey Navarro Foster and Natalie Naudus. When Leo (voiced by Foster) doesn't return home after a hook-up with philanthropist Michael Forrester, her friend Summer (voiced by Naudus) cons her way onto Forrester's private island to search for her. As Leo tries to escape and Summer tries to find Leo, listeners are provided with a window into their pasts, describing their nomadic lives and how they turned to petty theft and cons to survive. With a youthful voice, Foster captures Leo's innocence and naivete, relating how her relationship with her parents dissolved after her older sister was murdered. Naudus nails Summer's detached, worldly attitude, gained when her bohemian childhood came to an end after her mother suddenly abandoned her. Foster and Naudus are well matched, with each effectively capturing the friends as they assess their situations and take risks to reunite. VERDICT A chilling production that will keep listeners riveted to the end. Share with fans of Rachel Koller Craft's Stone Cold Fox or Eliza Jane Brazier's Good Rich People.--Stephanie Bange
