Description

This historical novel offers "a fascinating glimpse into Civil War life from an unconventional perspective" (Kirkus Reviews).

A Pulpwood Queens Bonus Book of the Year

Before joining the Confederate army, brothers Joseph and Thomas were actually sisters—Josephine and Libby. But that bloodiest battle, Antietam, leaves Libby widowed. She vows vengeance, dons her husband Arden's clothes, and sneaks off to enlist with the Stonewall Brigade, swearing to kill one Yankee for every year of her husband's too-short life.

Desperate to protect her grief-crazed sister, Josephine insists on joining her. Surrounded by flying bullets, deprivation, and illness, the sisters also face other dangers: Libby hurtles toward madness, haunted and urged on by her husband's ghost, while Josephine falls for a fellow soldier. She lives in fear, both of revealing their disguise and of losing her first love before she can make her heart known to him.

In Sisters of Shiloh, bestselling novelist Kathy Hepinstall writes with her sister, Becky, to show readers the hopes of love and war, the impossible-to-sever bonds of sisterhood, and how what matters most can both hurt and heal.

Novelist Hepinstall (The House of Gentle Men; The Absence of Nectar) worked with her sister Becky, who holds a history degree, to pen a brutal yet stunning novel about two Southern sisters who decide to fight in the Civil War. Headstrong Libby, determined to avenge her husband's death, dons his clothes and joins the Stonewall Brigade; introspective Josephine follows suit out of loyalty and a need to protect her sister. As the war rages on, Libby is still haunted by her husband's spirit while Josephine falls in love for the first time, with a fellow soldier. The Hepinstalls highlight the sisters' fear and bravery in battle and their frustration over having to live constantly in disguise. VERDICT Similar to Laird Hunt's Neverhome in content and theme, this novel differs in its use of the omniscient perspective (as opposed to the first-person narration in Hunt's book), as well as in its love story that acts as a perfect foil to the gritty realities of war. Fans of Civil War-era historical fiction will find this exciting page-turner thoroughly engaging.--Mariel Pachucki, Maple Valley, WA
