Description

From the New York Times Bestselling Author of The Magnolia Palace: A thrilling story about love, sacrifice, and the pursuit of dreams, set amidst the glamour and glitz of Radio City Music Hall in its mid-century heyday.
New York City, 1956: Nineteen-year-old Marion Brooks knows she should be happy. Her high school sweetheart is about to propose and sweep her off to the life everyone has always expected they’d have together: a quiet house in the suburbs, Marion staying home to raise their future children. But instead, Marion finds herself feeling trapped. So when she comes across an opportunity to audition for the famous Radio City Rockettes—the glamorous precision-dancing troupe—she jumps at the chance to exchange her predictable future for the dazzling life of a performer.

Meanwhile, the city is reeling from a string of bombings orchestrated by a person the press has nicknamed the “Big Apple Bomber,” who has been terrorizing the citizens of New York for sixteen years by planting bombs in popular, crowded spaces. With the public in an uproar over the lack of any real leads after a yearslong manhunt, the police turn in desperation to Peter Griggs, a young doctor at a local mental hospital who espouses a radical new technique: psychological profiling.
As both Marion and Peter find themselves unexpectedly pulled in to the police search for the bomber, Marion realizes that as much as she’s been training herself to blend in—performing in perfect unison with all the other identical Rockettes—if she hopes to catch the bomber, she’ll need to stand out and take a terrifying risk. In doing so, she may be forced to sacrifice everything she’s worked for, as well as the people she loves the most.

A troubled soul in high school, Wilfred "Wil" Threadgill returns to town as a major music star, but in the New York Times best-selling James's Hiss Me Deadly he's getting threats that lead to a band member's death and sets librarian Charlie Harris and bewhiskered kitty Diesel into action; originally scheduled for March 2022. Radio City Music Hall is the exalted site of prolific author Davis' (The Magnolia Place, 2022) latest thrilling historical fiction novel, which springs from the true account of a serial bomber who paralyzed New York City during the 1950s. Events and the ensuing investigation are recontextualized through the character of Marion, a member of the famous Rockettes. As a performer and as a woman of that era, she faces tremendous pressure to conform both within the rigidly synchronized dance group and under constrictive gender expectations. While Marion's magnetism and superior talent make her exceptional, they also make her an easy target for the attention-seeking terrorist. Frustrated by the lack of progress made by the police, Marion enlists perceptive young doctor Peter to provide insight into the search--a character modeled after the real psychiatrist who pioneered criminal profiling and was crucial to the Mad Bomber's capture. Davis masterfully draws Marion into the story, setting the scene for a cinematic conclusion. Readers will be attracted to the intriguing history and moved by Davis' entrancing narrator.

An engaging story set in 1950s Manhattan focuses on Radio City Music Hall and its performers. It's 1956, and Marion Brooks thinks she's satisfied with her life. She lives comfortably with her businessman dad and her older sister, Judy, in Bronxville, she has a fiance who's suitable (even if she doesn't feel all that excited about marrying him), and she has a job teaching her true passion: dancing. It's not like having a dance career herself, but with her overprotective and overbearing father, it's as close as she's likely to get. Then she gets fired. Dad advises her to start planning her wedding, but then by chance she hears about an open audition for the Rockettes, the iconic dancers of Radio City Music Hall. She goes on a lark, but when she's offered the job, she's dazzled--so much so that she upends her life, taking it in stride even when she's kicked out of the family home. Living amid the merry chaos of the Rehearsal Club, a Manhattan boardinghouse for women in the performing arts, she welcomes the grueling training dancers undergo, then relishes the four-shows-a-day performance schedule. She even finds time to party and, in spite of her newfound independence, is intrigued by Peter Griggs, a psychiatrist interested in what would come to be called criminal profiling. But New York City isn't all bright lights; for an astounding two decades, someone called the Big Apple Bomber has been setting off explosives in public places without being caught. He's bombed Radio City twice--and when he does it again, Marion will have to grapple with far more shocking changes to her life. The novel is rich with historical details, and it comes most vividly to life in the passages about the Rockettes, with all the sweat, agony, and camaraderie that go into those miraculously perfect performances. This historical novel's strong point is finding the grit behind the glamour of the Rockettes.

A dancer joins forces with a psychiatrist to find a bomber targeting New York City in the kinetic latest from Davis (The Magnolia Palace). It’s 1956 and dancer Marion Brooks, 19, has just joined the Radio City Rockettes, having defied her father Simon’s wishes that she marry her childhood sweetheart and settle down. Though she’s sad to not have her dad’s approval, Marion is thrilled when her older sister, Judy, agrees to attend the Rockettes’ Christmas show. But tragedy strikes when a pipe bomb explodes in the theater, killing Judy. The Big Apple Bomber claims responsibility in a note, in which he also disparages Met Power, where Simon is an executive. Determined to stop the bomber, Marion seeks help from Peter Griggs, a psychiatrist she met on a blind date. Though police officers initially discount Peter’s profile of the bomber, one officer acknowledges Peter might be onto something. Emboldened, Marion and Peter surreptitiously search Met Power’s records to see if a disgruntled former employee could have set the bombs. As the plot builds to a dramatic climax that sees Marion putting her life at risk, Davis expertly incorporates behind-the-scenes details of the Rockettes, including the intricate choreography of their wooden soldiers number. This page-turner delivers the goods. Agent: Stefanie Lieberman, Janklow & Nesbit Assoc.

Davis's (The Magnolia Palace) 1950s-set novel stars 19-year-old Marion Brooks, who teaches dance in New York City. Her widowed father barely tolerates her working because he expects her to marry her beau, Nathaniel, and settle down in the suburbs. Marion wants more. On the day she is fired from her teaching position, she overhears that the Radio City Rockettes are holding auditions. Sharing this exciting opportunity with her father and sister, she is told that it is out of the question. She sneaks off to the audition and wins a spot in the troupe. Upon hearing this news, her father banishes her from the home. Meanwhile, for 16 years the city has been plagued with random bombings at crowded places like Radio City by a person whom the press calls the "Big Apple Bomber." A catastrophic bombing finds Marion colliding with the bomber and propels her into a dangerous search for the perpetrator. VERDICT Davis shares memorable facts about the Rockettes and Marion's struggle to balance 1950s society's expectations of what it means to be a woman with her desire to break free. Fans of Davis's previous books will be enthralled.--Susan Santa
