Description
From America's most trusted name in pediatrics, a comprehensive guide to treating and preventing nasal allergies, asthma, food allergies and intolerances, and more.
Allergies are one of the most common ailments, causing children to miss school and parents to miss work. Left untreated or unresolved, stuffy noses, itchy skin, and irritated bellies can lead to chronic asthma, eczema, inflammatory bowel disease, and neurological disorders.
Today's parents don't just want to treat their family's allergy symptoms; they want to eliminate allergies and prevent chronic and long-term health complications. The Sears show them how. Drs. Robert and William Sears present a science-based approach that has helped alleviate allergies in many of their patients, providing a plan not only for treatment, but also for prevention.
A family-friendly resource, The Allergy Book offers all the reassurance and accessible, practical advice that parents need to resolve their children's allergies, now and throughout their lives.

Starred review from May 15, 2015

Physicians Robert (The Vaccine Book) and William Sears add another title to the "Sears Parenting Library" series with an in-depth look at the root causes, diagnosis, treatment, and outlook for those who suffer this common--and potentially fatal--autoimmune response. Allergies seem to be forever on the rise, with designated "nut free" zones in schools and kids who carry their own EpiPens(R) a common occurrence. The Searses present the best of traditional medical advice with an honest evaluation of alternative remedies often sought by parents today. Covering ailments, such as nasal allergies, eye allergies, and asthma, and examining food allergies, such as those to eggs, nuts, and milk, the authors provide parents with suggestions to treat the symptoms and prevent future allergic responses. VERDICT This essential title addresses the most timely of concerns, such as gluten sensitivity, injection therapy, and the role of genetically modified foods on our immune systems.

        April 1, 2015
Fans of the prolific Sears pediatrician duoRobert, whose The Vaccine Book (2007) aroused ire because of his skepticism toward official immunization recommendations, and his well-known father, William, aka Dr. Bill on television, will embrace this reasonable, tip-filled, and genuinely helpful guide to solving allergy problems. The physicians discuss the many ailments allergies cause and recommend nutritional changes, supplements, and holistic therapies. They explain that anyone hosting a party for kids should know that the most common allergic foods for children are milk, eggs, peanuts, wheat, soy, tree nuts, and fish, while for adults, the most likely offenders are peanuts, tree nuts, fish, and shellfish. Antibiotics, aspirin, and ibuprofen can also cause allergic reactions. The authors warn readers about hidden sources of allergens (eggs can turn up in canned soups and in salad dressings), and discuss healthy eating, favoring fruits and vegetables over gluten-filled foods. Even allergy-free people will benefit from checking out the Searses' easy-to-read, clearly laid-out guidebook.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2015, American Library Association.)
