• Trans People Are Mentally Ill and Therapy Can Change Them
• Trans People and Feminists Don’t Get Along

The title and subtitle of Erickson-Schroth and Jacobs's book encapsulate its parameters: on the one hand, this is an excellent selection that examines myths about transgender people; on the other, the confrontational tenor may deter some readers. The tone is fitting, given that the trans community has been marginalized for so long. However, to appreciate this selection, readers will need a certain amount of respect, curiosity, and commitment to learning. With those caveats acknowledged, for the authors' intended audience, this is an exemplary work that addresses issues in four different categories: identity, sex and relationships, health and safety, and history and community. Erickson-Schroth and Jacobs correct many misconceptions and offer effective advice on how to think about, talk about, and interact with transgender communities. They also provide an impressive list of further materials-from other books to national organizations and conferences to mental health resources. VERDICT An absolutely essential volume for teens who are interested in learning more about the trans community, but readers who have less experience with the topic should start elsewhere (for instance, Susan Kuklin's Beyond Magenta).-Mark Flowers, Rio Vista Library, CA

Starred review from May 1, 2017
Psychiatrist Erickson-Schroth and psychotherapist Jacobs examine 21 myths and common misconceptions about transgender and gender-nonconforming people. The discussions are sorted into four categoriesidentity, sex and relationships, health and safety, and history and community. The writing is clear, honest, and sensitive to the transgender population. In addressing the common misconceptions that you don't know any or you'd recognize them, the authors explain that there have been transgender persons throughout history, including soldiers, authors, musicians, professors, and politicians. They also discuss how the language and conceptualizations of gender have evolved and will continue to do so, and they identify current preferred terminology. Several chapters help readers understand current bathroom bill debates, offering a sympathetic and caring perspective on a divisive topic, one involving several of the myths neatly exploded in this carefully researched book. Erickson-Schroth and Jacobs offer further reading suggestions along with a resource list of support agencies. A timely and worthwhile purchase for libraries as well as middle- and high-school counseling offices, community centers, and places of worship.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2017, American Library Association.)
