Birdie's Book
(OverDrive MP3 Audiobook, OverDrive Listen)
When Birdie goes to visit her grandmother for the first time, she learns that her grandmother is a fairy godmother—which means Birdie's a fairy godmother too! Trained by fairies in a magical land called Aventurine, human fairy godmothers have been hidden protectors of the world for centuries. Birdie' s family talisman, a singing stone, has been broken, and now only Birdie can use the stone to travel to Aventurine to repair it.
When she gets there she meets Kerka, a warrior-like girl who has been sent to help her find the other half of the stone. Will Birdie and Kerka have the knowledge and strength to banish the shadow that has come over both the garden in Aventurine and Birdie's family? One thing's for sure—no one who travels to Aventurine will ever be the same again!
For girls who are fans of Harry Potter and have outgrown the Disney Fairies series and the American Girl books, the Fairy Godmother Academy is the perfect series—fantasy books filled with magic and adventure but grounded by contemporary girls and issues.
The series boasts an amazing Web site that allows girls to enter the world they visit in the books. There they can do activities both on- and offline, vote for things they'd like to see in the books, and connect with other Fairy Godmother Academy fans.

- bioText: Jan Bozarth was raised in an international family in Texas in the sixties, the daughter of a Cuban mother and a Welsh father. She danced in a ballet company at eleven, started a dream journal at thirteen, joined a surf club at sixteen, studied flower essences at eighteen, and went on to study music, art, and poetry in college. As a girl, she dreamed of a life that would weave these different interests together. Her dream came true when she grew up and had a big family and a music and writing career. Jan is now a grandmother and writes stories and songs for young people. She often works with her own grown-up children, who are musicians and artists in Austin, Texas. (Sometimes Jan is even the fairy godmother who encourages them to believe in their dreams!) Jan credits her own mother, Dora, with handing down her wisdom: Dream big and never give up.

Bozarth gently melds magic, family history and self-determination in this multilayered debut, first in the Fairy Godmother Academy series. Sarah Cramer Bright (nicknamed "Birdie" for her redbird-colored hair) has been uprooted from California to New York, but it's not all bad news: she now has the opportunity to reconnect with her enigmatic Granny Mo. Birdie takes the reader along as her companion and confidante, sharing her love and knowledge of plants as she ventures into her grandmother's extensive and mysterious gardens. While resting near a waterfall, Birdie dreams herself into the fairy land of Aventurine, "a land for only the strongest dreamers.... Dreamers with destinies." But Aventurine is more than a dreamâif Birdie and her guide, Kerka, can complete their quest to find the missing piece of the Singing Stone, Birdie can become a Fairy-Godmother-in-Training and have magic in her world "that can make a difference, not just to people, but also to the world itself." Bozarth crafts an alluring world that encourages lingering and further visits. Although conceived as part of an online experience, this novel is strong enough to stand by itself. Ages 8â12.
