Description

Gothic horror at its best – Daily Express

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is a terrifying glimpse into both a horrific gothic scenario and a psychological phenomenon of 'dual' personality. The novel was well ahead of its time in 1886 and continues to be a firm favourite in the horror genre and beyond.

Dr. Henry Jekyll creates a mysterious elixir, which he hopes will help to enable him to explore the hidden depths of his personality. Coinciding with his experiment, Mr. Edward Hyde starts to appear more frequently on the London scene, often by night, and always leaving a trail of destruction and fear in his wake. When Mr. Hyde is seen disappearing into Dr. Jekyll's office, tongues begin to wag – how are the two men related, and can the evil Mr. Hyde be stopped before a scandal ensues which threatens to engulf the mild-mannered Dr. Jekyll too?

      • content: Grover Gardner is the perfect choice to read this well-loved classic. His straightforward reading shines in its simplicity. Subtle changes in intonation and pacing help to unfold the psychological drama of the respected London doctor who is transformed into the repulsive, evil Mr. Hyde. Gardner delivers perfectly the atmosphere and vitality of Stevenson's writing without melodrama. This is a treat for listeners new to Stevenson, as well as those who know his writing well. C.R.A. March 15, 2012

Stevenson's pioneering psychological thriller was released in 1886, but unlike 1883's Treasure Island and Kidnapped, also 1886, where the story is propelled through action, this tale is dominated by talk. The dreaded Edward Hyde remains an elusive character, appearing quite sparingly. Very little actually transpires, and the eventual solution to the mystery and the revelation of Hyde's true identity unfurl through Jekyll's first-person narrative related after his death. Despite its brief length, the familiar story moves slowly. Stevenson's prose, however, is crisp, lush, and a delight on audio. VERDICT Oscar-nominee Ian Holm acts the story rather than reads it, providing a virtuoso performance that's a treat for listeners. The novel's brevity makes it prime travel fodder or for playing aloud in a classroom to students. Nice price, too.--Mike Rogers, Library Journal
