"Narrator Euan Morton's gravelly voice and Australian accent embody Ted...His excellent pacing and gripping delivery maintain tension." — AudioFile Magazine

How do you move on when the world won't let you?
12:46: Claire Bingley stands alone at a bus stop
12:47: Ted Conkaffey parks his car beside her
12:52: The girl is missing . . .
Six minutes in the wrong place at the wrong time—that's all it took to ruin Sydney detective Ted Conkaffey's life. Accused but not convicted of a brutal abduction, Ted is now a free man—and public enemy number one. Maintaining his innocence, he flees north to keep a low profile amidst the steamy, croc-infested wetlands of Crimson Lake.
There, Ted's lawyer introduces him to eccentric private investigator Amanda Pharrell, herself a convicted murderer. Not entirely convinced Amanda is a cold-blooded killer, Ted agrees to help with her investigation, a case full of deception and obsession, while secretly digging into her troubled past. The residents of Crimson Lake are watching the pair's every move . . . and the town offers no place to hide.
"Complex, human characters, and a dark, meaty story, and fine writing, and a great sense of place – this is one of the best crime thrillers of the year. Sign me up as a big-time Fox fan!" —Lee Child

        January 1, 2018
Sydney homicide detective Ted Conkaffey, the pariah narrator of this engrossing suspense novel from Ned Kelly Award–winner Fox (Hades), is halfway through his trial for the rape and attempted murder of a 13-year-old girl when the NSW director of public prosecutions withdraws the charges, since the evidence isn’t strong enough to satisfy a jury beyond a reasonable doubt. Per Australian law, Ted could be prosecuted later if more evidence emerges. After his wife asks him for a divorce, Ted moves north to Crimson Lake, Queensland, where he hopes to remain incognito. Ted’s lawyer puts him in touch with Amanda Pharrell, a convicted killer who has become a PI after serving eight years in prison. Ted and Amanda decide to partner on an investigation to find a missing bestselling author. Meanwhile, Ted wrestles with harassment from local cops, a reporter on his tail, and vigilante attacks against him. The surprising conclusion will leave the reader looking forward to Ted and Amanda’s further adventures. Agent: Gaby Naher, Naher Agency (Australia).

      • content: Fleeing allegations of having committed a horrible crime, former police detective Ted Conkaffey moves to isolated Crimson Lake in Queensland to start over. Narrator Euan Morton's gravelly voice and Australian accent embody Ted, who is consumed by anger and paranoia. When Ted arrives in the isolated town, he partners with PI Amanda Pharrell, herself a convicted murderer, to solve the disappearance of author Jake Scully. Morton varies his delivery enough to differentiate between characters while staying firmly in character as Ted, a choice that works well with the story's first-person narrative. His excellent pacing and gripping delivery maintain tension even when the plot occasionally sags under the weight of its multiple storylines. This is a series opener, and listeners will hope for more of Morton as Conkaffey. E.C. © AudioFile 2018, Portland, Maine

      • content: Candice Fox, winner of two Ned Kelly Awards and co-author with the bestselling James Patterson, has unleashed another taut, gripping crime thriller that is as accomplished as her publishing history suggests. The titular north-east Australian town is where ex-cop Ted Conkaffey has gone to escape the accusations of sexual assault levelled against him. Here, he encounters the equally broken PI Amanda Pharrell, who takes Ted on as a partner for her current case: the disappearance and likely death of a local author. The stakes are high for Ted as he tries to keep a low profile in a media-saturated world, befriending only a stray family of geese. Anyone in town could be a threat to his life, even Amanda—a hammy PI with a penchant for rhyming and tactlessness, whose previous imprisonment for murder doesn’t bother anyone in town nearly as much as it should. The central mystery simmers tightly beneath the atmospheric setting, where the air is thick with humidity and punctuated with the barks of nearby, unseen crocodiles and the thrum of the cane-field wildlife. This is an intriguing thriller to sit alongside other Ned Kelly winners Dave Warner and Garry Disher—regional crime fiction done dark and well. Fiona Hardy is a bookseller at Readings Carlton and a committee member of the Ned Kelly Awards
